When some one in the house has their menstrual period my dog goes into the trash and takes the sanitary pads and plays with them as if he was eating them. what can i do to stop him? i have closed the door in the bathroom but others forget to do that. i prpmptly dispose of the trash basket or put it where he can not reach it but that doesnt always work if im the only one to do it and no one else does. i have talked to the dog punshed him and put him in the cage and denied him yummy treats but its hard because he stops for a while then goes back to doing that.

Be smarter than the dog and get a secure trash container that he can't get in, put it high where he can't reach, shut the bathroom doors, keep trash under sink inside vanity...

put scented carpet powder at the bottom of the trash can and put a bag over it and just dispose of the bag more often during menstrual cycle.. I had the same problem, but the powder really works.. my dog hasn't done it since..and I have an open garbage can with no lid on the floor.....by the way..to all of the other ignorant remarks from inconsiderate people...THIS IS A COMMON THING...MALE DOGS PICK UP FEMALE SCENTS...FEMALE DOGS GET PERIODS TOO!!! DO THE RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING FUN OF A PERSON WHO HAS AN ISSUE THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT

My dog ate part of one 5 days ago- she is still having diarrhea even tho she passed the pad 2 days ago. Vet said to make sure she doesn't do it again. I have a garbage with a hinged lid but she just noses it open. I am going to put a small receptacle reserved for sanitary pads up high somewhere and then empty it a couple times a week.

Whoever said that they just switched to tampons, I am laughing hysterically. You still have to dispose of tampons! Or is it just us poor people who have defective plumbing . . . you can't flush those things. Anyway, my dog used to do this whenever we would forget to hide the trash. It is irresistible to them. The worst part was, he would eat the tampons and then later bring up what looked like a cat hairball, but was an essentially intact tampon. You have to secure your trash or your bathroom door, or they will continue to do it. My dog was a brat, though--if there was ANYTHING in the house on a low shelf that he could reach, it was fair game. He would eat candy . . . once he ate a whole package of lemon cookies. What a character.

Your dog is attracted to those products because they smell like a dead or dying carcass to him. It is his scavenger instincts kicking in and the only way to stop it is to get a bigger trash can( which he will only figure out a way to knock it over to get to what he considers a HUGE TREAT) or dispose of them outside in another trash can. When you denied him he just figured you were claiming the carcass for yourself. Once he felt you were done with the carcass he went to claim his share. That is why he stopped and then just started back up a little later.

I empathize with you. I have gone through the same thing many times, and the answer is simple. There is no changing the dog's habit. No matter what anybody else tells you, this is natural. The human scent of that... "time" is the same as a dog's, and they naturally feel the urge to lick or eat or "play" with feminine products the same way they lick themselves to clean themselves. Get a baby gate!

Because I can't keep my dogs out of the trash, I hang a plastic grocery bag on the hook behind the door. I put all my trash in there, and then dispose of it ever day.

Put the trash can up. My dog has a fetish for used Kleenex only when we have left him and he wanted to go. We put the trash cans up before we leave the house. You might want to try Bitter Apple spray for dogs. You can get it at Petco or Petsmart. Just spray it on the trash and he should leave it alone.

Wrap the napkin in toilet paper, place in a plastic bag [like from Wal-Mart] walk outside and place it in your garbage bin. If you don't have a bin outside to put out for the garbage men, then find another trash basket and place in in the garage - then do the same thing - for goodness sakes....get it out of the house.

I have a dog and two cats myself and they seem to get into everything. You may want to try to get a small waste basket that will fit inside of the cabinet under the sink. Then not only will the garbage be out of the way visually ... it will be out of the way of the dog too.
