I recently received an email from a friend in Iraq who said that it's a completely different atmosphere where "70% of people want us here and know we need to be here, 5% don't want us here (the insurgents), and 20% are rich enough they don't have to care. The US is crying for us to leave and push the Iraqi's to "run" when they're hardly able to crawl on their own..."
I think regardless of elections, etc we need to be there at least another 3 years.
How long do I THINK we'll be there? I dunno, the "War" in Iraq is technically over, but the "War on Terrorism" should never cease...

Jaylor 60's friend knows the score. No one likes the idea of Iraq being occupied but the majority of Iraqis know that we're a necessary "evil".
My guess Is that we'll be at the current level of involvement (approx 130,000) for another two years and then we will draw down over a period of 3-5 years until we are officially "out" of Iraq. I'm forseeing Kuwait retaining US personnel in the region as it should be.
Democracy ihas a terrible side-effect: its contagious. I expect that the Middle East of 2020 will be a much better and freer place than the Middle East of 2000.

It will last as long as the US maintains a presence in Iraq. After the US leaves, another year or two.
Sound a lot like Vietnam.

I was there once, now I am going back again in 2007. That area of hte world has been in conflict since the beginning of civilization, and for us to think we could end anything over there is ridiculous.

which war? if you are talking the "war on terror" then at least 10 to 20 more years. if you are talking the "war on the middle class" then as long as the democrats raise taxes. if you are talking "middle east" as in Israel and everyone else, then as long as antisemitic governments remain in power. if you are talking about the civil wars in Africa, they may last at least another generation. so, which war are you asking about??? war on aids? war on illegal immigration? war on drugs?
