You ever watch these sci fi shows where someone from outter space escapes from their ship on a POD?

Its just a storage device. iPOD was created by apple and because of their "i" trademark for iMacs, they call it iPOD.

POD is just a storage device, but the reference to it in multimedia means its a storage device for a data of music collection. If you want to carry it with you and make it mobile and if you want storage for just music instead of using your hard drive, then you use a pod. When you hear the term "pod", you should automatically assume they are referring to the iPOD. When it comes to the recent multimedia bonanza, pods are referred to as the iPODS. There are no pods that are independent from Apple's iPod because they have that term "iPod" patented. There cant be another POD reference to a different device because the pod reference in multimedia is patented by apple.

When it comes to multimedia software being distributed over the internet and cell phones, pods are not in that category. We use software that enables us to listen to certain music extensions like .mp3 and .mp4 and .wav. In order to listen to these extensions, we need a sound player....for example, realplayer, winamp, even itunes.

.mp3 is to multimedia software as .doc is to Word processing softwares.
