Get rid of tenure, have a merit system for teachers, if they don't meet certain standards, they can be fired. Smaller class sizes, don't let the teachers, and their left wing union brainwash these kids with their liberalism.

There are several parts to my answer. Each part contributes to the whole, and missing a few parts does not give the same results.
1. Become involved in our educational system. Now I am not just simply talking about the PTA and such. Most people who vote on the school board do not know who they are voting for. Few volunteer their free time to the local schools doing things ranging from teacher aids to library assistance.
2. Teach children how to learn. Do not teach them how to take a test. There is a huge difference between learning and memorizing. Anyone who applies themselves enough can learn how to memorize. That does not mean they have an understanding of the subject.
3. Balance out the income difference by evenly distributing the tax dollars either state wide or nationally. Our worst schools are in our poorest areas of the nation. And no matter how much you push "no child left behind" and no matter how much you test them, those poorest schools remain poor both financially and academically.
4. Focus on academics. Some schools have football fields worth more than all their teachers salaries.
5. Encourage creativity, curiosity and individualism.

In order to improve our educational system, there have to be changes in what kids are learning and how they learn them. There have been many technological advances through the years and I believe teaching has fallen behind. The greatest change has been the evolution of the internet and all that it brings. Teaching today should involve a lot more use of computers and the internet in order to be useful to the children of the next generations.

I am from NYC--actually The Bronx. When I went to elementary and jr. high we were taught--and we HAD to know our work, and pass our tests. Our teachers took no crap. (When I had to travel to high school, it was easier--but unsafe).
These days, the teachers are afraid of some of the students--and some of those students only go to school to socialize and do bad things (have little or no interest in learning anything). And they get away with it!!!
I agree with the person who suggested getting rid of the school board--or at least overhauling it. Where does all this public funding go? The kids don't have everything they need (the ones who actually want to learn). I've heard of NYC teachers buying things with money from their own pockets--that it ludicrous.

Cut political programs like "Bi-lingual Ed." and teach the three Rs Quit spendin money on people who are here illegally. Park the buses, quit worrying that every black kid isn't sitting next to a white kid. Take that money and build quality schools.
Our schools became a playground for liberal social tinkerers and the rest of the world passed us by.

first you have to keep school interesting, instead of making them feel like they are in the army. yes they have to have standards and morals but they also need a kind word and love.

Raise the bar each year; those who pass, move on, those who don't work at McDonald's or pick lettuce.
