No. I got my GED and I make more money than my parents. Its all about determination and intelligence. I left high school because of the fact that it didn't work for me. On my tests I would get A's all the time, but because I didn't care to keep my paperwork in a notebook and get graded for the same assignment 2x, I was failed in two subjects. My IQ ranks above 140 and I scored better than 95% of the country on my Iowa test scores every year. The school system is flawed because it leaves room for error with children with my disposition. I got bored with school because I learned faster than the other children. Busy work only further frustrated me.
So to put it simply. No, you can still be very successful if you put your mind to work.

It does not ruin the teen's future permenately, however, it does cause some damage. Some employers may see a drop-out as someone who isn't dedicated to work hard, or to stay with the company. Other's may see the teen as a slacker, or a trouble-maker. Those who are willing to hire that teen are going to most likely pay less than they would pay someone who had at least a high school diploma. Even if the teen has a GED. However, over time the individual can demonstrate an ability to learn, an ability to work hard and to succeed. That will, in the long run, pay off. But getting that foot in the door is going to be a lot more difficult without the diploma.
My mother recently changed jobs, and she noticed that while she was better qualified for a lot of jobs than most of the applicants, she wasn't allowed to apply because she didn't have a college degree. That is going to be magnified for those who don't have high school diplomas. My suggestion is to stay in school, no matter how hard it is. Otherwise, you're setting yourself up for disaster, which only a select few will ever over-come.

It sure makes your life a lot harder! I know a diploma only seems like a piece of paper, but it's really a passport to a better life. Just ask everyone you know who doesn't have one. I'm not talking about the 20 somethings. Ask the older people. To make it through life successfully, nice house, nice car, good job (which all contribute to a happier family that almost all of us have at some point tin the future) requires either a diploma, to get the better chances at the better paying jobs, unless you intend on becoming an entrepreneur and then you have to be very lucky, smart, and hardworking. And if your not willing to do the work it takes to graduate from high school, you probably won't have the motivation to make yourself succeed at running your own business. So you'll end up doing all those sucky jobs that all the educated people don't want. Why should you take what someone else doesn't want? Get the diploma. If its too hard, get a tutor. Spend more time on it. Ask for help. If this is because of personal circumstances, is there anything you can do to work the situation out, or at least make it more tolerable until you can graduate? I know that sometimes life seems too hard, but you'll just have to work through it, no matter how hard it is. Otherwise, when you get older and face this situation, its going to be so hard to work through it.

Technically, no, it doesn't entirely ruin your future. However, it does tend to make life harder in the long run. There are a lot of things you won't be able to do without a high school diploma. Later on down the road, you may really regret having dropped out, and by that time it will be too late to go back and make things right. You would be pretty much guaranteeing that you will never make it into a university or state college. For those you have to have a diploma and a decent GPA. High school may be tough, but without a diploma, it'll be a lot tougher to get by. Education is everything these days. To get a good, well-paying job, you need a degree or certificate from a college. Community colleges and most technical schools take just about anyone, as long as you have a GED/diploma and can pay for classes. Even graduating with a really low GPA can damage your chances for the future, as I have learned. My high school GPA was lower than a 2. I could not get into the university I desperately wanted to go to. I couldn't acheive the career I longed to have. Dropping out of high school entirely will not completely ruin your future, but I can tell you from experience, you will regret that decision, just as I regret mine. As I said, high school may be tough, but it's only four years. After that, you'll have what you need to make a great life for yourself. Just remember you can get through it. Nothing is ever harder than it seems.

I don't believe that it does...while it may make it harder to be very successful if they are willing to start at the ground floor and put in the time it takes to really learn they can be very successful. I don't only mean doing manual labor either. How many of our parents never went to college or even finished high school and are very successful.
I think that a good education is important however experience can sometimes be even more important. There are thousands of people out there who have learned a skill through on the job experience....the hardest thing is watching a relative who is very knowledgeable in their field with 25+ years experience have a difficult time finding a job because they don't have a college degree.
I would never tell anyone to drop out of high school but I don't think that not having an advance degree will ruin your life...IF you are willing to get out there and do the work necessary to succeed in the path you choose.

The negative stigma about teenagers dropping out of High School is not as bad as it made out to be. Those that are not able to get their diploma can always get their GED, and learn what they need to start at a community college. After 2 years of success at a community college anyone has a chance to transfer to a 4 yr univeristy where they can continue their education. In today's society a college degree is becoming a requirement to having a good job, those without a college degree have a much harder time in life.

YES! All the answers are focusing on the exceptions and the possibility that the future will be okay if you drop out.
But in reality, dropping out is a bad idea. A high school diploma of today is just a basic standard, you still need more training and experience beyond it. And if you don't even have a diploma, it will be harder to get this training.
Overall, not having a diploma is a HUGE HURDLE to get over. Just stay in school, you'll be proud of yourself when you graduate.

Not permanently. You can always continue your education later, but it's a lot harder to go to school and work to support yourself. You can get a GED, but it won't carry the same weight as a diploma, if for no other reason than it proves to prospective employers that you don't finish what you start. You will NEVER have any kind of job with a future without at least a GED, and I think you will find that people have less respect for you. Tough it out. I promise you will be glad you did! Good luck!

It certainly doesn't help. It is possible for some to get a GED, and then to use that GED to get further training in some field. But the odds are against the dropout. Even high school graduates often lack the basic skills to work in today's economy. Without a decent job, which is increasingly harder to find, the future for today's teenager is not very promising.

No, but it is better to stay in school. If I had stayed in high school, I may have not missed out on things like prom, friendships, a diploma, and entrance into a nice college.
I dropped out of high school and went to a community college after a few years, because I craved knowledge and it was difficult to begin learning in a college environment with so little education. I had to take remedial courses before I could even begin to take regular courses. I felt behind and ignorant compared to most people and I saw my mistake in taking high school for granted (it's free education).
Also, when you don't have a diploma, companies are more likely to hire people who are better educated. You will not be paid a high salary if you are a drop-out. That has been my experience. I am poor and will probably stay poor until I finish my B.A. to make up for my past mistakes. Even then, people may judge me for not having a high school diploma and not take me seriously.
You should stay in school and then when you have the diploma in your hand, you will see how your life will improve.

No, because there is always the solution of going BACK to high school at a later age. Dropping out simply makes everything more difficult.
This also depends on what you mean by "ruin". Some people think working at McDonald's all your life is perfectly up to their standards.
