Okay, here's what you should do. It's by far the easiest, most effective, AND cheapest way to get involved.
1. Buy a 5 gallon gas can.
2. Fill it up with gas. 87 octane is fine.
3. Drive to within 1/4 mile of your local GM dealership.
4. Douse all Hummers thoroughly.
5. Light them.
6. Toss gas can in the fire, and run to your car.
7. Drive home, sit on your couch, and think of all the trees you just saved.
There you have it, your wildest dreams can be accomplished for less than three hours of work and less than $20.
Seriously, if you want to get involved in the fight against Global Warming, the best thing to do is to write your senators and congressman and let them know how adamantly you support hybrid vehicles and ethanol research. Suggest larger tax breaks for both consumers and vehicle manufacturers for alternative fuel technologies, and cite Brazil as an example of how it can be done.

I am just going with my gut instinct here, so forgive me for being naive, but I think simply using less.
Less energy, turning off the tap between brushing, thinking of what you buy, where it comes from (if you have a choice between veggies something locally grown/made, versus something from far away, going with the local product, even if it costs a bit more). I think turning lights off when not needed, A/C off when the weather is still pretty good out, basically just limiting your footprint would be an excellent start.
And drive less. This is a tough one if you live in the burbs, but if you live in the city or near Transit, make use of it. It may take some adjusting, but think of the trouble you car gives you and can get rid of those headaches. Plus can spend the time commuting reading. When I first abandoned my car I thought I was going to lose it, but after a month or so, I didnt miss my road rage and loved my new reading time!
I think going vegan would be good too. Although I find that difficult.
Anywho, just some opinions. No science behind it.

Easiest and most effective are unfortunately not the same. The easiet thing you can do is carpool or take public transportation.
But, the most effective by FAR would be getting the government to pass legislation that punishes businesses hurting the environment.

Bring your own bag to the supermarket, those plastic bags are not environment friendly. Use public transport instead of a car. Switch off lights when not in the room. Switch off the TV when you're not watching. These little things will all help.

Incorporate little changes into your daily life so you'll continue to make a difference every day (see sources below for ideas) and whenever you can, volunteer to help change legislation to help preserve the integrity of the planet.

We need to recycle, use public transportation, carpool, ride bikes, garden, use less heat and electricity. Stop pouring chemicals into our waterways.
