Organized religion is great in theory but unfortunately not always so great in practice. I don't believe that it is going to be either our greatest asset or our demise. It falls somewhere in between. Religion is a one size fits all god and morality. We all know how effective one size fits all really is. There is always the huge chunk of population that it is totally inappropriate for. If we will have the luxury of looking back and deciding what our demise turns out to be I believe it will be ego. The idea that one human is better or more important than another. Ego has led to war, over consumption, pollution, greed, violence, most all of the evils that are deteriorating society all ready. Ego is a lack of spirituality, a lack of religion. It is ego that causes people to kill "in the name of god" It is not religion telling them to. Religion, in theory is love. The roots of religion could cause no harm, it is the infiltration of ego that has destroyed the message. Ego will be the downfall of modern day society.

I think that it will be mankind's general greatness and the greatest cause of harm. Being that so many people follow a numerous different religions. So many people have faith in what and who they believe in that following the guidelines of that religion are sometimes taken in the wrong terms and people such as some of the mid eastern Muslims take on the role of sacrificing themselves and others thinking that it will better the world or earn them some place in a better afterlife. But, just as we often misinterpret things we also make better lives by following what we believe in. Such as the 10 commandments, those commandments were set forth to make a better world for mankind. So in some aspects religion will cause harm if misinterpreted and will cause greatness if we follow the guidelines set forth by whatever we believe in.

Both. Creation comes only from Destruction. and vis-a-vis Now I"m not telling you to destroy someone physically but the concept of this has been embedded in many religions centuries and centuries ago and sadly it still holds to be true today. The greatest comfort is also the greatest demise. Allow religion to work for you personally and not to be deterred by the macro-religious warfare concept that is destroying many lives and community. Religion taught by the wrong priests, shamans, spiritual leaders, self-proclaiming phrophets is what we should worry about when it is only in thier best interests and not that of the overall community. Beware of the spin that these "respected" individuals place on what we rever as sacred because that my friend is what leads to war, crusades, jihads, and sense-less killings because other's follow the misinterpreted teachings of what initially was to promote peace among mankind. It's scary. I understand your concern.

Greatest harm..... as a matter of fact, Sam Harris theorizes in his "The End of Faith" that organized religion must be abolished in order for mankind to survive the next 50-100 years, and I agree with many parts of his thesis. If you're truly interested, pick up a copy.

It has caused great hardship and death in the past and this will not change in the future. We can not blame the Muslims and the Christians for this because they are only doing what they feel is right.
