Students should be allowed to carry a cellular phone with them during school hours. To prevent disruption of class the phones should always be off. They should not use the phone unless they are on break or it is an emergency. Not a "Oh my goodness, my hair is a mess" emergency, but a true emergency. We have school violence and natural disasters, things that happen not on the average day, but a parent or guardian does feel more at ease believing that if they can find their child or reassure them. So I say allow cell phones, but be responsible. Don't disrupt the class.

No cell phones should not be allowed during class. I think they would be too distracting during class. Some students would be too tempted to use them to i.m. friends and play games on their phones during class. If students are in class then the office should notify them of an emergency. If they have a emergency during class then they should notify a teacher and be allowed to go to the office and make a phone call. After-school issuses can become a problem such as when a child misses a bus or some after school practice is cancelled and they need to notify someone. Even if students were allowed to bring phones to school not every student has a cell phone. Also students who do have cell phones we have no way of knowing if their phones are off all day or during class for that matter. I would suggest that a student code be issued to each student, along with a password that is linked to a alloted number of minutes that can be accesed on phones located on the outside premises of the school. The phone calls can be monitored to make sure the students are not using the phone to socialize but for emergencies only. These phones could be very usefull in many circumstances. If someone is hurt, or students fighting and a teacher is not around the student can enter their access number and the office can be notified and make an announcement on the speaker where and what the incident is. We would not have to worry about prank calls because each number is attachted to different students.

I'm with disneyprincess cell phones should be allowed but only used during appropriate times. In the locker until the end of school. The way things are going on in today's society, cells are used for a safety measure. My kid goes to school a long distance from home and I use that to contact him when school is out. Are you ok, how close are you etc.? So yes, let the school kids have their phone used appropriately.

No! Children are there to learn, not chat and text message. If there is some situation where the child need to call home there are phones in the office or pay phones around campus. When I was in high school absolutely no electronic "entertainment" devices (discmans, mp3 players, cell phones, etc.) were allowed on school ground, period. I think that is the way it should be.

No, they should not be allowed to have phones turned on during class. There are enough distractions in school without this. I think it's okay for a kid to have his cell phone with him in case of emergencies, but the phone should not be turned on during class time. If a student wants to use his free time (lunch or recess) to talk with someone I don't think there's a problem with that as long as the student does not lose track of time and come back late for class.

I believe that cell phones should be allowed in school, but with the same limits that they have in many other places.

For example, cell phones may not be turned on in hospitals because they interfere with pace makers ,
they may not be turned on in courtrooms. If one rings, the bailiff takes it from the person. No exceptions.
It is expected that cell phones are turned off in churches, in movie theaters, at concerts, in important meetings, at ceremonies, etcetera. and I think that judges have the right idea. If one goes off, it gets confiscated and not returned.

Then why allow phones in school at all?
Because the world is an unpredictable place and when there is an incident like Columbine or a weather emergency, children want to contact their parents and their parents want/need to contact the children that they love.

A phone can be used to remind a student of an after school commitment that might have slipped his or her mind. My son often forgets that he is to stay at school to be picked up for doctor's appointments and he gets on the bus, making us miss the appointment. Cars are not allowed in the lot until the busses leave and there is no where to park other than the lot, so he goes off and we miss the appointment.

There are also job-related reasons that phones can be thought of as necessary. Whether a student is checking in with a working parent or the student is checking in with their own employer, the phone can make life go more smoothly.

So, yes, I think phones should be allowed in school, but kept turned off unless there is an emergency. After school is out, everyone can turn their phones on and annoy everyone else.

NO I feel kids are at school to learn and keep their minds on work. I feel that the cell phone thing is way out of hand. I do feel that the schools should LET the kids that need or want to call Parents ... for a question or something should be aloud.. Also that the parents can call and tell their kid directly on phone what they need to . NOT like put roast in or laundry! but important things. * if they carry phones they should all be kept at office in school and picked up at end of day.

yes cell phones should be allowed in schools just not to be used during a class. It should be allowed to talk on a cell phone between classes and if emergency during a class.
