Establishment of the United States Army by the Continental Congress. Not sure if that is the reason that Flag Day is on June 14, as that is the day that the Stars and Stripes was adopted as the official flag two years later, in 1777.

The date was chosen in honor of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes pattern as our national flag by the U.S. Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
