If left up the odds of getting a clean seat would increase.

I Agree.

Why can't we all just check the status of the seat and lid before we start doing our business and adjust according to our needs??? Men don't complain that women leave it down, so why do women complain if we leave it up?

It takes just as much energy (if not more) for the guy to lift the seat as it does for the woman to put it down, so why should down be the "default" position?

As per the "I might fall in" argument... TURN ON THE LIGHT!!! LOOK BEFORE YOU SIT!!! The only possible exception is if the woman is disabled or has a medical condition where the extra 2 seconds it would take to put the seat down would cause a problem. If that's the case, then of course it SHOULD be down. Otherwise, the seat position should NOT be as big an issue as some women make it out to be.

You have a good point there that leaving the seat up would result in a cleaner seat.

Another reason women don't like the seat up is that they will often sit down without checking and fall into the toilet. This is not fun (I've done it late at night before too).

Other people may think that the toilet and bathroom look nicer (for guests) if the seat is down. You may even want to put the lid down as well.

The "seat rule" was invented by a lady who found herself sitting in troubled waters. Imagine someone running at breakneck speeds through darkness into the bathroom in a display of total lack of forethought, dexterity, and aim. One would think she was lucky in hitting the Throne at all. Rather than accept the responsibility that her ninja seat skills are lacking, she blames her foolishness on every male in the household.

Do men have a special "put the seat back up when you are done honey" rule? Of course not.

There is no required seat rule, only required seat sympathy. Just because it is called a Throne, it does not mean that whomever was attempting to sit on it is a Queen or King.

But there is always compromise. In exchange for always putting the seat down, we must expect that the TV be changed back to ESPN before turning it off during the regular season.

It's mathematical:

Between men and women, there are 4 ways a toilet can be used.

Seat Up: 1/4 of the uses
Seat down: 3/4 of the uses

1/4 of the uses the seat needs to be up--which is when a man pees...but he also needs it to be down to do that other thing (1/4), and a woman needs it to be down for both uses (2/4).

So to leave it up makes the importance of a man's single use 3x as important...which clearly isn't fair.

Not to mention that it is infinetly more gross to sit on the open seat for us girls.

Seat down is the universally accepted proper ettiquette way.

Because there is nothing like getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, sitting down on the toilet and only then discovering that your husband has left the seat up.

Well, I don't know if you have women in your house, but the simple fact is that they have to sit down to do either one and you wouldn't want them to sit on the actually toilet, would you? Or is this just a rhetorical question? If you really want to put your mate or sister, mother, grandmother, etc. first, then you want to think of them. I mean how hard is it for us to put the seat back down when we're finished? A second or two? It's not really that hard to do. The real question is if you want to do that. If you don't then you already know the answer. Either way, you know what to do if you want to put others first. To be a man involves more than just being a male. A real man is man enough to do what's best for peace and to put others feelings in front of his. Plus, it will make the females a lot more happy. Plus, wipe the toilet if you wet it. Real simple.

Are men really so lazy they can't lift it up then put it back down when they're finished?? Why do men not understand what the toilet paper roll holder's for?? It seems whenever my husband goes in there, the roll winds up on the back of the toilet.. Men and women do things to annoy each other. Bottom Line.

Because when toilet seats were first invented, men were expected to do everything for women and the tradition remained even after Feminist movements.

That's a good idea. But, I don't like the way the toilet looks w/ the seat up.

They lower it so us women don't have to worry about falling in. My husband seems to never lower the seat when he's done and our sons (we have two sons and two daughters)never lift it up to pee so they pee on the actual seat. I'm the one who has to clean it every time they go, which really pisses me off.
So, if you want a happy female around make sure you life the lid to pee, put it back down when you're done, flush, wipe the seat if you miss.
"If you sprinkle when you tinkle, be a sweetie and wipe the seatie."
