Everyone who lives in America is an American. Citizenship and residency are two different things. If a person lives in a country and considers that place thier home, then it is. Whether you are a citizen or not, your home is your home.

I think they're smart enough to realize that this Congress is gullible enough to fall for it. Technically, by geography, they're 'americans', just 'mexican-americans', not 'US citizens'.
And, they've been at this stuff for YEARS. Very organized. Very intent, too, on getting full rights as american citizens. They also recognize that most of us have been too busy working and watching entertainment on TV instead of reading the news that no one knows what they're up to, or not enough people are willing to speak up on the issue, which sort of amounts to the same thing. The barn door's being closed, only problem is it's already burning, and the horse is gone...sad day when the Republican Hope is now on a par with 'waffles' Kerry....The individual states aren't fooled on the issue, but problem is, they're not as influential as Washington, so no one really listens to them until there's an emergency or something. But, they can still do stuff like conduct their own reviews, bring out the facts, hold public votes on issues, that kind of thing. And, like Texas, they can choose to act locally to solve problems and enforce the law.
Maybe that's where all this is going to end up, with states' rights taking center stage again, after all these years...it'd sure be nice if SOMEBODY took a hard stance on the immigration issue...because all this administration seems to look at is dollar signs. I'm sick of it, I'm sure others are sick and tired of hearing about how the Senate seems to think selling citizenship for 2,500 dollars or whatever is a suitable 'fine' etc. Don't mistake the power of lobbying in all of this....and these lobbyists speak FLUENT spanish....and that's not a coincidence...

They are not arguing their rights as Americans, only as people. They have homes, families, bank accounts, car loans, and credit cards. They have worked here for years and established their lives.Ppl,they aren't here to take over your lives and ruin your families. Most of you didn't give them a second thought until all this immigration stuff got started. They know they are illegal here and don't consider themselves Americans. However, most would like to be,given the chance.

Why is our government listening? I know I'm not supposed to answer with a question so I'm sorry. I just think they would be crazy not to use whatever argument that would work. If you are illegal you have no rights because you are illegal.

Because they think they've got a good grip on politicians in Washington who care about their constituency. Most liberals fall victim here, and it doesn't help to have liberal news outlets like the New York Times or LA Times cheering for their rights either...
