My grandparents have one. They got him as a puppy a few months ago. He is very very hyper. I wouldnt say he was a good lap dog. Hes about medium size and probably weighs about 9-12 lbs. He doesnt really shed much but the white fur gets dirtly easily. They are very smart dogs though.

West Highland White Terriers are wonderful companions but they are TERRIERS. They can be a little hyper, love to run, dig, play, are very affectionate, need exercise and a fenced in yard. They so try to dig under the fence. They are small dogs. My westies weigh 14 and 15 pounds, are friendly and get along well with other dogs (not cats). They like attention; my Westies do not shed but they are groomed once a month and brushed often. The are a bundle of energy. My Westies are not lap dogs, they are always into something, doing something and only rest when they are sleeping. THEY ARE JUST WONDERFUL COMPANIONS. Forgot to mention, they are prone to allergies and they do bark. They usually have a long life span. A recent Westie that I lost was over 17.

i personally dont have any, but i have relatives and friends who do. i dont know about shedding, but i dont think its a lot (dont get a golden retreiver theyre shedding machines) they tend to bark more than other breeds (not the noisiest, though) good lap dogs (unless theyve got lots of energy and wont sit in lap) dont weigh much probably the average is about 15-20 pounds (im guessing), and i would get another dog, westie or not. (preferably about the same size) usually less than a foot tall live about 10-15 years very sweet temperament if you are looking for a dog, i would think westies are a great choice. check out this website http://www.downsouthwesties.com/westie_characteristics.htm

Terriers can be a bit nervous, but besides that, Westies are fantastic dogs that are great with kids and devoted to their families. I did petsitting for a westie for quite a while and she was a wonderful dog to spend time with. They're a lot of fun and truly wonderful dogs. I'm hoping that when I no longer have so many dogs that we're right at the city limit, I can buy a Westie someday. Since you have so many questions, I'm going to go and grab one of my dog encyclopedias.
Westies (West Highland White Terriers if you're going to get fancy):
-Need regular exercise (needs a short to moderate walk on a leash or a good game in the yard daily)
-Westies should sleep inside
-coat needs combing 2-3 times a week, plus shaping every 3 months
-Westies are happy, curious, and always interested in what's going on
-demanding and very affectionate
-One of the friendliest terriers
-Not good with small animals
-Independent and somewhat stubborn
-Westies bark and dig
-They get to be 15 to 21 pounds; males get to be about 11 inches high and females get to be about 10 inches high
-They do have pretty big grooming requirements
-They are energetic and will need playtime at home, walks, and games to stimulate them
-Easy to train
-Good watchdogs
-Major health concerns: globoid cell leukodystrophy, Legg-Perthes, CMO
-Minor health concerns: copper toxicosis, cataracts, patellar luxation
-Occasionally seen health problems:deafness
-Suggested health tests: hip, knee
-Life span: 12 to 14 years
-Because they're small to medium sized dogs and are very affectionate, they make great lap dogs. I'm sure this is a dog who will want to share the bed with you!
Hope this helps!
-Ellie

all terriers are a little high strung, but they are also intelligent, active and loving. yes they shed however they look extra cute when they get a "puppy cut". all dogs require patience, exercise and love.
westies can be your best friend with the proper training

They are a compact hardy dog, terriers have alot of energy but are alot of fun and will mellow out some with age...they have a two layer coat, wirey top coat and softer undercoat, are easy to brush, need trimmed and shaped up about every three to four months.
