Technically, you would be counting your EGGS, not chickens -- it's OK to count them, and I do when I put them in the incubator, but there's no guarantee they will hatch. However, on about the 10th day of incubation (it takes 21 days to get a chick) you can candle them -- this means shining a bright light behind the egg. You can see the embryo and the blood veins going from the embryo to the yolk, etc. in a developing egg. An egg that is not developing will look "clear" or plain inside. These won't hatch and can be discarded. Then count the developing ones -- but that's still no guarantee they will hatch.

THAT'S AN OLD WIVES TALE BUT IT IS SO TRUE IF YOU COUNT THE CHICKEN before they are hatch it not because they'll die its a old saying like example mother can i have $20.00 to take my girlfriend out mom replay's don't count your chickens before they hatch son you get it know its only an expression

No, because something could happen in between times to lessen the number,and you can't count on soething that has not yet been realized.
