I'm flying Malaysia Airlines from New York to Kuala Lumpur. Although I'm booked on Economy (may be, that is what I can afford), I dread getting my 6 ft. 250 lb body getting crunched for 18 hours in that cramped up space. Any thoughts on how to find ways for an upgrade?

Sorry to say it, but you are probably out of luck as the upgrades on the long-haul and International flights are almost always completely full, very far in advance. While it doesn't hurt to ask at the ticketing counter when you check in, you'd have a better chance at getting a bulkhead row seat so ask for that instead. You don't have a seat in front of you, just a wall partition, so you get a little more leg room and more space.

International Upgrades are hard to get for free if not nearly impossible. You either have to use your milage program and cash in your miles or just simply buy a first class seat. Your only saving grace MAY be if they oversell coach, but to be honest, the people who will get upgraded without question will be their frequent fliers. Being that you are tall, always book the Emergency Exit Row. That seat gives you extra leg room. But at 250 you shouldnt have to, but if you have to use a seat belt extension, you will not qualify for the exit row. Go to the airlines website and see if you can select your seats or move them online. Exit Row's are usually blocked up until close to departure time or day of departure depending on how full the flight is. Exit Row is second best to First Class. But honestly, dont even think about getting an upgrade for free. International First Class seats are worth several thousand dollars and upwards of $10,000 on some airlines. There is no way a gate agent would trade an economy ticket for first unless it was someone who was loyal and flew that airline and had hundreds of thousands of miles in their account.

Good luck

If the plane is overbooked in financial device they might improve passengers to top classification and a few from top classification into organization. in spite of the indisputable fact that till you're a wide-unfold flyer of extensive status with the airline your probabilities of being singled out for an improve are very, very small. there's no such situation as a unfastened lunch they say and hence you're suitable. To get to the better echelons of an airlines wide-unfold flyer prestige you will have already got spend tens of hundreds of your forex with them and flown many, many miles. Even then they do no longer improve till they might desire to for solid financial reasons.

For future reference, being a travel professional can sometimes allow you to get moved to business class, upon request, if properly dressed, and if the seat is available.

Pay for it or use Frequent flyer miles (depends what class your Y fare is booked in) not all economy tickets are upgradable.

Have them put you on a list looking for a better seat.. If they are overbooked in coach they bump people up to business to make room..Most important thing is to be nice to the clerk.. They can change your ticket with one keystroke
