My FIL has been sick with prostate cancer, and slowly getting better. He has not been able too much lately but slowly getting there. My husband and I want to make this father day really special for him. My normal ideas are things from the grandkids, handprints, pictures that type of thing. Sense he has not been able to do much he has been feeling very useless, because he is always a man on the go, never had a easy day of work. We just want him to know how much he is NEEDED and loved. What are some great ideas for best grandpa and father (father in law)

you're father in law is very fortunate to have a daughter in law like you since he is feeling useless let him get in on some of the suggestions maybe he would like to go out for a nice dinner with his family being with you all should make him feel that he is very important to his family ,ask him to tell some stories from his past when he was a young boy i have noticed older people enjoy doing this ,and last but not least each one of you tell him what he means to you and what an inspiration he has been in your life and how much you admire him as a husband a dad a grandfather and a father in law this should make him see he is the #1 dad

I'm not sure what could be better than things from the kids and grandkids - a home made calender w/ pictures of everyone, Best grandpa T-shirt - trust me, as a dad, we just eat this stuff up.

My suggestion is to have something at his place. Maybe a barbecue or a family get together with all the family and grand kids. Maybe it could be a theme get together- something he enjoys, like fishing or something.. Make sure you take lots of pictures. Get them developed and then make a scrapbook for him. It bet right now he feels a bit depressed and when he sees all his family including the grand kids gathered there just for him he will perk up. Then when he gets the scrapbook he will treasure the memories that you have created for him. Dawn

I think your answers sound good but you could also spend the day with him and help do things with him. I work at a daycare and we bought tshirts and paint and made shirts for the fathers. The front said " My children (or grandchildren) don't walk all over me ( with their footprints surrounding the words) and the back said " but they have me in the palm of their hands. ( surrounded by thier hand prints).

they turned out really cute!

Make a photo album with everyone in it doing things together. Then give him a camera and tell him that he has to help fill in the blank pages with new photos.

A cool new shirt or belt and some stuff from the children. Also, maybe cook him a nice meal, if that's appropriate.
