This is so highly personal to me. It varies from person to person. Some people can note the faintest differences in merlots from brand to brand, others cannot. Some people hate white wine and love reds. One person can argue that a nice light chardonnay pairs best with grilled chicken, and another wine lover would argue that a deep, full bodied South African shiraz would be better. I love reds. For me, the deeper and more complex, the better. White wines get no play on my wine rack, boo hoo for what Miss Ettiqute says, lol!! I am a self admitted red wino. I drink a glass or two or three with every meal, every day.

depends on what you're eating, and of course your own personal tastes . . white with fish and poultry, sauvignon blanc if you like a lovely light wine (australian or new zealand is the best, price quality) if you're having a barbeque and it's summer, a lovely light chilled rosé from Provence (south of france ) delicious, and reasonable . . if you're going for duck, veal, or some light meat you can go for a pinot noir, usually the ones from Washington or Oregon are great, and for a delicious piece of lamb or beef, you'll want to go with a good bordeau . . usually a cabernet / merlot/ or eventually a mixture of Shiraz . . again, australia has some wonderful wines and they can't be beat in price and quality . . good luck . . .

If you have no experience, ask the store clerk or wine buyer. Based on your likes and dislikes or your meal, he can give you advice.
