They can, but it's not right. Because if you two start going out and for some reason you break up, then you can never be friends again. That's when you lose everything you had from this person. That's why you can only stay friends.

I was best friends with my high school sweetheart for 5 years before we did anything about it. What's even funnier is that we both knew we liked each other, but our friendship was so special we didn't want to ruin it. And when we finally got together it was even better!!

Definetely because you already know each other very well and thats what it takes to get along and be a couple.....IF you are now feeling attraction then you should go for it.....Since you are so close it wont hurt, it will just make you guys stronger....
