Each religion believes that their god/spirit is the only one. The better question, however, is: Is there really a god in the first place.

God revealed the same message throughout humanity, and that is to submit to Him and worship Him and noone else. This can be seen from Moses's message in the Old Testament to the Jews, "O Israel, Your God is One God", and Jesus repeating it in the New Testament.
The reality is that Judaism and Christianity deviated from the religion of God and invented their own ideas and tampered with the texts which lead to differences.
Muhammad(peace and blessings of God be upon him) is the final Messenger who came with a text that has been preserved, and the religion of God which will be a proof until the Last Day.
It is not that God changed, but rather that people tampered with what God revealed.

In general because people from around the globe of differing cultures have all felt the need to address the questions involved in religion within their own culture and understandings, across thusands of years of time.
Specifically in western religions, while the above applys, the big split came with the appearance of Jesus. Prior to this the Jewish seekers were searching and waiting for the arrival of a messiah to come and "save them". When Jesus came some accepted Him as "the Christ" (from the Greek language of the day, meaning "messiah" from the Hebrew language of the Jewish or old testamant. Hence Christians and Jews. Jews and Christians alike have split into different cults, or groups, based upon differences in what they perceive the Truth to be, or how to address the Truth. In Christianity, far and away the most "splits" come from strong personalities of leaders and their abilities to gather followers and supporters (believers in their view of the Truth).

The vast majority of religions believe in the same God. It is on other matters such as the Virgin Mary, Jesus being the Son of God, The Trinity, etc., that they differ. Take Roman Catholicism. It was the only Christian faith in Great Britain until Henry the 8th in the 16th century decided when he wanted a divorce that he 'fell out' with the Pope and named himself the head of the Church in England. Protestantism in Germany was more or less the same.

Every religion attempts to reveal God, but they each do it from a different angle. Your perception of God depends on where you were born in this world and what you were taught about God. Someone raised as Muslim in Pakistan is going to see God differently than someone raised as a Christian in Texas. For the majority of believers, religion is not chosen, you are born into it. And this is an arbitrary outcome depending on geography and culture.

This is because you believe there is only one god. Many religions and cultures believe that there are more then just on. But, even with just the religions that believe there is only one god many of them are different because they disagree on what, where, when who, why and how to obey this god.

There are many religions due to people claiming they know the truth. People these days don't take initiative to learn and take time to study and research the truth. People follow those who go with the crowd/society creates.
Take for instance in the Bible..1 Corinthians 1:12 ..Paul, Apollos, Cephas all followed Christ. People choose to follow those who followed Christ out of convience and comfort therefore end up not following Christ at all. As time goes by, scriptures has been modified to the comfort and convience for those people who follow and if not, another religion is born for those other people.
Hope that helps

I agree with you that there is so many religions but let's talk about religions that came from Heaven for (Muslims,Christians & Jews)
If you took a look (a look for knowing the truth) you will see that the main source of the three religions is the same (ALLAH) & the three profits are talking for the same reason to make people believe in only ONE GOD that has no partner in whorshiping but there is so many people don't want us to know the truth to make us enemies to each other.
believe me becouse i am saying the truth

Because everyones interpretation of God is different and yet there are some people who do not serve the true and living God. They have their own Gods.
But all will know who the real and true God is, it's just a matter of time.
