I am a legally blind 46 year old adult going to college to learn a career and be self supporting while doing something I enjoy, but am having a hard time living on a very fixed income. have high gpa and bad credit. tried loans with no success and scholarships do not come through. My husband is also in college as artritus made a career change necessary. Badly need finantual help as we fall through the cracks in the system for any government help. Ideas?

I receive SSI but have never been able to work much which is why I went to college, but it is very difficult to live on six hundred dollars a month. We get pell which pays tuition and books with nothing left. Our credit is bad due to the artritus in his hip causing a loss of work and bankrupsy. I have been applying for scholarships for the last two years now without success from fastweb. Guess I do not answer them correctly. We do not want a hand out, just a hand up to help ourselves. We moved to AR six years ago for health reasons from New England and are at the end of the rope hanging on to the knot. When school is done in two years jobs promise to be numerous in our field (CADD), but we need to get there.

Hello.

I am also legally blind and live in New York State. There are state agencies that can help blind and visaully impaired people gain education, training and/or vocational rehabilitation. Whichever state you are living in, you can go to the official state website and look up these services. These agencies can help you pick schools, target your desired career goals and help you with the financial aid aspects. I was able to obtain my BA and also continuing education as needed to keep myself marketable in the job market.

I hope this helps and good luck to you.

Talk to your college financial aid administrators...They CAN Help! Credit does not figure into federally funded financial aid but it does figure into all other forms of aid. Pell Grants, SEOG, Stafford Loans and the like are guarenteed by the government and do not require a credit check. Many other educational opportunity loans will require a credit check. You may want to contact your local vocational rehabilitation office for your state. Often, when medical conditions require a job change, the state will help pay for all the schooling! Look into it.....

Try applying for grants since they are 100% free and you never have to pay them back. First go to your college counseler and them them about your situation and see if they can put you on the right track for aid. Second go to you career center on campus because they can help you look for and apply for Scholarships and GRANTS(its their job to do so).

There is a website, www.findaid.com that might help you. Also, you should qualify for social security disability because of your illness. Some states offer full college scholarships for low income people, any college in your area should have the information. Good luck.

Scholarships have nothing to do with credit. Look for grants for the blind. Good luck.

Check out the college of your choice's financial aid offers, and see if that college offers scholarships. Also look for scholarships online.

I believe that once you apply for student loans your credit history is not a factor and in fact your credit history will not even be checked. Just ask the schools finincial advisor.
