because they were originally used by lawyers to carry their "briefs" (legal docs) to and from court proceedings

they call it a briefcase because it is used to carry lawyer's briefs.
Lawyers have a tendancy to employ beautiful dumb women, and occasionally, the lawyers must carry a change of briefs before going home to the wife.
