cats do have lips!duh!!!they don't just say meow either they have quite alot of different noises.

Actually cats do have lips; they are just not as big as yours or mine. The meow is the sound coming from their vocal box not enuciated

I don't think the "m" sound is so important as the "e-ow", indicating the rising pitch sound cats tend to make. I think the reason it's spelled "meow" is because "eow" would be an awkward looking word.

Same reason people go "ruff ruff" for a dog and "roar" for a lion and whatever other animal sounds. They get as close as they can.

it's the way to spell what they are saying. Just like saying Woof, for a Dog or Cock-a-Doodle-Doo for a rooster.
