One of the many reasons I left the Christian Faith. Damn women oppressing Nazis!
EDIT_THIS IS WHAT TICKS ME OFF! In one breath most Christians will tell you that being gay is an abomination, and in the next, they decide they don't want this one to apply. You can't have it both ways. Either you follow the Bible or you don't. This is why people call Christians lying hypocrites.

It was a shame at that particular time when Paul wrote to the brethren at Corinth. The women where disobedient at home and Paul heard about this and wanted to put a stop to it. So he told them since you cannot be obedient at home, keep silent when you come into the house of the Lord.
God has now given us the power of the Holy Spirit, and if a woman is living a righteous life there is no reason she should keep silent in the church.
Woman are vital to the ministry of the church. It was women who first went to look for Jesus after he was buried. The first Evangelist was the woman of Samaria, who ran into the city and said COME SEE A MAN!
Women because of our very nature have a lot to offer in the ministry of church. So women rise up and do the work of the Lord.

I do not believe that women can not speak in church, though that is the way some churches interpret that scripture. The key word here as thus saith the law. We are not under th law, we are under Grace. Women were a very important part of the ministry in the New Testament.

Paul was speaking to the men of the church, because their wives were asking a lot of questions about this new teacher on the scene (Jesus). But when the husbands would not share, they began to come to the synagogue to ask questions of their own.
Because they didn't know how to present themselves in the synagogue, Paul asked them to try to control their wives while service was going on and keep them quiet. Actually the women became very loud, disrespectful and irate while Paul was ministering to the multitude. Back then, it was the husbands "duty" to take care of all the religious aspects. Today it is quite different. The Lord wants women to speak very much today. Imagine how silent the Church would be if women were not allowed to speak?

The same book also talks about women prophesying and praying. (1 Corinthians 11:5) I prefer to think of the "in" in this passage as meaning "during," as in, while the sermon is going on. So why would Paul pick on women? When was the last time you heard a man try to talk during church? My wife and mother in law are always whispering as the sermon is going on, something I have tried to discourage, but they've been doing it for years, and my mother in law is a little bit attention deficit, so I'm not going to change anything now. Men, on the other hand, even if they aren't respectful, they at least don't whisper and chatter during the sermon, generally speaking.

What Paul was addressing here was prophesying aloud in church. When the women were filled with the spirit, they started to prophesy or speak out loud during sermons and it became out of line. Divine order was not being established so Paul mentioned that it is a shame for her to speak or prophesy out loud when divine order was being established. The whole chapter was about prophesying or speaking out loud in service before the lord and edifying or lifting up the body. This wasn't being done in an orderly way because before that, Paul stated in verse 33 that God was not the author of confusion, but of peace. Women are encouraged and used mightly in the pulpit by the Lord. This verse is often taken out of context. When you study the original Greek and Hebrew texts, it is more clear about what the Lord meant. Deborah was a Judge in Israel. The samaritan woman at the well led her whole village to the Lord, she had to speak and preach about Jesus to do it, right?

Not all women are prohibited from speaking...just wives.
The Greek word used for women in that verse means a wife. there were women that spoke in church; but, they were not married. it makes it look like the husband doesn't know anything if the wife speaks for his house.
(Luk 2:37) And she was a widow of about fourscore and and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
(Luk 2:38) And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
Why is it a shame for a man to have long hair or be effeminate??? It's God's will.
1Co 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
Had people not such a knee jerk feminist reaction they wouldn't even need the definition below. Even in the verse you cited it ought to be clear that an unmarried or widow woman has no husband to ask.

because the bible was written when women were still considered property no rights of their own. we've progressed beyond that point, which is one reason the bible should not be taken so seriously.
you might also want to look into the story of lot (the man from soddam) who was considered righteous by god because he offered up his virgin daughters to be gang-raped by a mob.
if you have any respect for women, you simply can't live your life as though the bible is the final word on everything. the bible is very hateful toward women. be glad our society is no longer that way, and leave it in the past where it belongs.

What it means is that the woman should not be the preacher. It is the man's job to lead the church. "and if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home" The men are the teachers and leader placed in their position by God.

The bible was written millions of years ago. Putting everything in context, men have always been ''superior'' to women, so thinking about it that way, it makes sense. Our society has changed and so in my opinion we can't stick to everything the bible says anymore.. Back then women weren't entitled to speak up anywhere, im glad to say it's change a whole lot, but there's always so much more to be done!

The Scripture says to "...rightly divide the word of truth..." Do not just read, study also. Studying will help you to place statements written in the Word of God in proper context. Remember, this is not a book written by one writer. This may account for many inconsistencies. Because people are not looking into the Word of God for themselves, many become victims of those who teach falsely. This is why studying the Word of God for yourself is important.
