Are you really fat? Pinch the skin on your stomach, near you belly button. Can you grab skin more than 3/4 inch? That is a measure of whether you really have excess fat, or just your body growing normally. Sometimes girl's bodies develop that way.
You can’t choose where your body gets fat or loses fat, you just have to control your exercise, eating and metabolism. If you have never been active before, your body doesn't have much muscle. That means any excess weight is fat. Even if you're thin, that extra fat can add up to extra flab on the tummy. Exercise adds muscle, which burns fat all day long.
After meeting the exercise goal above, you should notice your waistline shrinking a bit, your jeans a little more loose. If not, you need to check out your eating habits.
Keep a food diary. When you start, don't worry about counting fat or calories, just notice how much and what you are eating. Just seeing it written down can be a surprise - you don't always notice how much you really eat when you eat it, but you sure notice when your stomach sticks out over your jeans. Watching what you eat helps you stay focused and eat healthier.

you can't lose weight from a spefiic area. you lose body fat equally throughout the entire body. sit ups, crunches, and other ab workouts are good but they are used to define your six-pack if you are very close or already have one. for losing body fat you want to stay active and keep moving. as someone already mentioned cardio work outs are key, like jogging and swimming. I haven't tried yoga yet so I will leave commenting on that to others

lots and lots of cardio work, it will help lean out the body. Yoga would be great in lengthening the muscles instead of building them up.
