I was not at home and my guests barbecued and used my good china to eat off and then washed it in the dishwasher. Their excuse was they wanted to eat off my "fancy plates" but did not know people had dishes that could not be put in the dishwasher.

They took them out of my china cabinet. Being behind glass should be a major clue that these are "for special" dishes.

Your guess were rude and inconsiderate to say the lest. Who does not know that dishes in a china cabinet are for special occasions only. I would ask to be reimbursed. You may lose them as friends but if they would behave in that manner your are probably better off.

Absolutely. My china is about $300 a place setting. With that being said - usually the people that I have over for meals do understand how to treat fine china or crystal and would not put it in the dishwasher in the first place.

usually most dishes these days, can be put in the dishwasher. so it is actually a legitimate excuse, no they shouldn't have to pay for it . you need to be more careful with the type of people you leave alone in your house.

Well first off they have no business using my china unless I take them out. I would be very upset at first and would probably forgive them but if it happened again they have to fork out some money.

Yes, ask them to pay. If they refuse, never let them come over again. Learn from this mistake

If no one asked them to put their hands on it in the first place then "U break U buy!"

I would at least ask them what their motivation was... why would they use fine china that was BEHIND GLASS at a BARBEQUE?!

It sounds like an accident, i would let it slide because they were my friends. And if they weren't your friends then you should be more careful about who you let in your house:)

Try to, why not. Next time don't have houseguests, unless you are around.
