Because the government encourages it. Look at all the benefits you can get if you have illegitamate children. Welfare... food stamps, free medical, free daycare, free education, child support. You don't have to work, you can sit on your @ss while the taxpayers support you. Sounds like a good deal to me. If I had no morals I'd squeeze out a couple of puppies and sit on my rear end all day long.

Whoa!! There's a lot of negativity from this question! I'm probably going to be fried in effigy for even answering this one!
I am 33 , my boyfriend is as well. We are living together and not married. We're due any time with our first child. He has two from a previous marriage. I have also been married and ended up having four miscarriages, so this is my first child. We both had the marriages from hell and have seen first hand that a marriage certificate is only a piece of paper if one or both sides have no faith in the vows they took. We are perfectly content in our relationship and do not believe that we need a piece of paper to solidify our love or commitment to one another.
As for those of you who think unmarried people think it's great to "pop out puppies" and "collect welfare"... I own a small medical/legal service which affords me the luxury of working from home so that I can raise our children and still have an income. My boyfriend works a full time position as well. Neither of us have asked for nor receive welfare, WIC, food stamps or any other type of aide.

I wish it would stop, but I think women are focusing on their jobs and making money, and deciding that at age 33 or so that they want a baby and don't have a spouse yet. So they have a baby not realizing how tough it is by themselves. Then you see these STUPID movie stars that do it, just like smoking. Monkey see Monkey Do. It really is not teaching your children the right lessons. When they get old enough they may think they were a mistake. You might be the best mom, but your children need Mom and Dad in different ways.

Now days it's seeming more appealing to be a single parent. Some women have gotten hurt too many times to want a man around. I support non-marital parenting over aborting or marrying due to a pregnancy.

I'm not sure how true this is, but I once read that they use the last name of the mother and the child to determine illigitimacy rates (i.e. whether or not they differ). If this is the case, a lot more women are keeping their maiden names, but passing the paternal name onto the child. This may account for a percentage of the numbers.

Because marriage is overrated. Because teens are not getting the education to know that abstinence and an open relationship with your parents is important. Because our health system is suited for people with lots of money, and denies lower class individuals a good medical program. Knowledge is power, and are schools are lacking, if you want your children taught properly teach them yourselves and you should have no problem.

Everyone wants to "play house" by having the "perfect" partner, child, home etc...and are so caught up in how well things are going for them, that they can't foresee what could happen in the future because they haven't made a lifelong commitment to their partner or their child.

Just because a lot of people can't commit to marriage, and a lot just aren't thinking of that and just sex. It happens because everyone lets it happen! For the most part it works out great! but a lot of times it screws up the kid!

Because marriage has become an obsolete institution. Its only purpose in most peoples' eyes is as a tax shelter, nothing more.

Because people like celebrities (tom cruise & katie holmes for example) make it look so great that other people think "hey, I could do that, it looks pretty easy"
