There are two major Christian interpretations of this. Some maintain that after life, one can go to Heaven or to Hell. Some say there is no Hell, and that a soul either goes to Heaven or just dies. The other debate over the Bible is whether the spirit goes directly to Heaven/Hell/death, or just sleeps in death, waiting for Christ's second coming, at which time everyone who ever walked the Earth will be judged and sent in the appropriate direction. The body is unimportant, as while many people interpret the Bible as saying we will have a bodily resurrection, one can hardly imagine a bunch of recently risen people wandering around in their old, decomposing bodies awaiting judgment. The current bodies we are using, well, it doesn't matter what happens to them because they will decompose.

At the time of death, a persons body goes where ever it is put - if buried in the ground, cremated, where ever the ashes are placed. The persons spirit goes to the Spirit World which is divided into two areas, paradise and hell. While there all spirits are given the chance to learn and grow and accept the truth. Spirits can go from hell to paradise but not the other way around. The Spirit World is where everyone is/will be until the Resurrection at which time the body will reunite with the spirit to form a soul which will never be separated again. After Resurrection comes the Judgement Day where as all are resurrected all will be judged and will learn where they will spend eternity.

Where your soul goes depends on a number of things. First, your personal beliefs. Some don't believe in Heaven or Hell, they just think we wink out like a candle and that's it. If you do believe in Heaven or Hell, where you go greatly depends on what kind of life you lived and if you have asked for forgivness. Some believe that you can be a serial killer and still go to Heaven if you ask for forgivness before you die. It is all a matter of personal belief.
Having been present at a few deaths (I'm a nursing assistant), I can tell you details about what happens to the body, but let's just say that the physical body stays on Earth to be properly seen to prior to burial.

A person I know studies religion very seriously - on a daily basis and has done so for many years. He studies all types of religions and he is a christian and yet not affiliated with any one church. This is what he believes...that when we die, it's almost as if our souls go to sleep. We will be judged on judgment day - everyone. All souls will be awaken at that time.
I don't know that I believe that since I believe in ghosts/spirits and all but it's an interesting concept. I don't think any of us are going to know the true answers until the day we die. So a few of us are going to end up going "I was right" or "I was wrong" --- like Zarkawi --- he's probably still waiting for his virgins. What a shame, huh LOL

At the time of death the person goes wherever their body is taken. For example, if they are to be buried, their body will go into the ground. Souls, heaven, and hell don't exist.

That's a question for a dead person, don't you think? Otherwise you're opening a question up to a million jaded and closed-minded answers biased by varying degrees of 'faith' - not logic. I've had that same question for years and I suppose, one day, this mortal will know the answer in truth - not in the theory of a religion. IN reference to the post-death body – I like to imagine that like boiling water rising as steam into the air, as our body decomposes, or is cremated, after death, the un-breakable molecules that compose a human blend into the Earth/atmosphere and we become part of it and it becomes part of us. But what do I know. I’ve never died or spoke with a dead person.

What happens at death--
Ecclesiastes 12:7 "Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it."
Psalm 146:4 "His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; in that very day his plans perish."
ECCLESIASTES 9:5 "FOR THE LIVING KNOW THAT THEY SHALL DIE: BUT THE DEAD KNOW NOT ANY THING, NEITHER HAVE THEY ANY MORE A REWARD; FOR THE MEMORY OF THEM IS FORGOTTEN." (ECCL.12:7)
SHEOL OR HADES, THE FIRST HELL
The first term in Greek and Hebrew means the grave. It's the grave where the dead await the resurrection.
GENESIS 37:35---I SHALL GO DOWN INTO THE GRAVE.
PROVERBS 15:11--HELL & DESTRUCTION ARE BEFORE THE LORD.
ECCLES.9:10---NO WORK...OR KNOWLEDGE...IN THE GRAVE.
MATT.11:23---WILL BE BROUGHT DOWN TO HADES
1COR.15:55---O HADES, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY

Well, it depends on what you believe in....... some believe if you worship Jesus and don't sin you will go to Heaven, or Hell if you don't believe in Jesus and are a bad person. Others believe you go straight to Heaven, because God forgives every sin, whether extremely bad, or just minor. Some people don't believe in Heaven or Hell and just think that when you die it's an everlasting sleep.

Catholics believe there is Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Purgatory is a place between heaven and hell that the soul goes through a purging process to remove sin before entering into heaven. If you have unconfessed Mortal sin upon death, you will go to hell. If you have unconfessed venial sin upon death, you go to purgatory for cleansing. If you have confessed all sin upon death, you go to heaven.

I think that people will go - based on whatever their belief is - to heaven, hell, nirvana or the like. The human brain is powerful, and can format an ending however the brain-program dictates. It's like dreaming. If you are conscious that you are dreaming, you can travel and do interesting work there. If you are conscious that you are dying or passing, you can direct your soul's departure. ;)
