When i go to school, i usually have to change my accent inorder for people to understand me and not to make fun of me. But if i try to use the american accent in me school, people usually laugh at it. well the problem is, they speak in singlish (known as bad english accent such as lor lar leh hor weh). What am i suppose to do? i really tired of using Singlish, i want to use american accent!

When someone from a different culture, with a different accent tries to join and be part of another, it's never easy. Don't feel like you have to change to make friends. Why not try engaging these school kids in other activities that don't involve talking so much? Try sports, video games or the movies. Once they get used to you, your accent will no longer be a hindrance.
And on your part, don't go making fun of their accent either. To each his own, remember.

I know that it is really hard to use the American Accent in Singapore, but for the comprehension of the natives, it is best you talk Singlish. Learn the language continuum - how they pronounce the words, and what it means. Eventually you will understand it. In the mean time, you can preserve your American accent by listening to tapes or t.v. shows with American dialouge, and also be around people who are Americans who have not changed their accents one bit. Remember that when going to school, dialect and accents do change dramatically as you are rigorously trying to adjust to the communicative lifestyle of the school. Its normal - so try my suggestion, and you will see that you will be "restored" without a problem. In terms of confidence - be proud to be American. Talk your accent - I mean its still English, so you can get around to it pretty easily. Increase confidence, and you will be great. :)

Obviously you shouldn't be worried about what accent you should use.
You should be more concerned with working on your English so you will spell words correctly and make complete sentences.
If you speak correct English, I don't think anyone will care what accent you use to speak it.

Do what is most comfortable to you. You can't please them all
If you keep changing your accent you will get laughed at but, if you keep one then eventually people will get used to it. Just do me one favor, don't try too hard to impress..
If they can't understand say a curse word, people tned to understand that. People used to make fun me until one day I cursed them out. He said "Oh.. The teahcer laughed and told the guy making fun of me "I though you said "I didn't understand him"
I know it sounds cheesy... be yourself
Their are 6 billion people in this world and SOMEONE CAN UNDESTAND YOU

If fear you have low self esteem. Who cares if they laugh at it...you are who you are. Unless that is, you are a democrat and have a twisted view of your own country and a self loathing respect of where you come from. No, not everybody hates Americans....I believe it to be jealousy. Yeah we're spoiled...but that's why we started this country....to do what WE want.

there are always going to be jerks no matter where you go. when somebody makes fun of you again, get in their face and ask them, "whats so funny?" usually they will freeze up and maybe feel stupid, just keep intimidating them :)..bullies usually aren't used to retaliation. violence doesn't solve anything, bear that in mind, but sometimes, people who actually make a stand get loads more respect :)!

just be like this: youre going to make fun of me? listen to yourself. You sound like lil jon just got his azz whooped. Pick a language, that way when you sound like an idiot and destroy a language you're only doing it to one. Something like that.
