Well you're not addressing the REAL PROBLEM now are you? Sure, you can shoot them, but then what? Next year guess what?, a whole new batch of feral cats will be wandering about.
If you are truly concerned about the feral cat population in your community a good place to start would be to educate the pet owners in your community on the advantages of spaying and neutering their pets.
Our community has a 'catch and release' program where feral cats are caught, spayed or neutered and then released into a controlled area. The reason they do this is because these cats are too wild for adoption, and by spaying and neutering them they are ensuring that the feral population doesn't propagate.

You shouldn't shoot ferrel cats. If you contact your local paws organization, they will set traps and capture the ferrel cats to spay and neuter them. It is no cost to you, it cuts down on the population. However do not destroy them, the ferrel cats provide you with a rat free environment. They feed on the rats and mice. In turn other large animals in your area feed on the ferrel cats as well. Just something to ponder when you are about to shoot the ferrel cats in your area.

Shooting Ferrel Cats or dogs is so inhumane. What you should do is set a trap with tuna or chicken and wait. Then you take him/her to the vet to be put down out of it poor misery.

I am a cat lover but ferrel cats should be destroyed. Shooting them is a little extreme.

Why is shooting FERAL cats not humane? How else would one get rid of them? Poison? That's how most communities do it - and it's horrible to watch. Shooting is (typically) a fast and relatively pain-free way to die. Sure, it would be nice to catch them all (humanely) and euthanize them (humanely). But at what cost?
After living in Hawaii for a number of years and seeing the devastation caused by feral cats to the native bird population (near-complete extinction of the native population in less than 200 years), I think that the FC populations worldwide should be controlled by any means necessary.

I am for it, if they are hurting someone or causing too much damage. People should have had their pets spayed or neutered and not abandoned to prevent so many ferrel cats.
If they live on a farm or large land where they are not going to be hurting other "tame" cats or children, then they can live.

By the way, what exactly is a ferrel cat? Like a stray?

NO WAY!! That doesn't solve anything. Have the humane society trap and find them homes, or contact a cat rescue agency (find via the internet on search). There are alternatives to being violent with unwanted animals. That is a drastic and cruel way to deal with them! Or advertise them homes on www.catster.com People do adopt!

Unfortunately, that wouldn't solve the problem. Shoot the people that don't have their animals altered, allow them to breed indiscriminately, and cause the cat colonies in the first place. It isn't the cats fault - it's the person who owned it and most likely dumped it's fault.
