Could be that the cat was taken from its mother too soon, and didn't learn the behavior.

Could be that the cat doesn't like the type of litter you're using.

Could be that the litter box is too dirty.

I don't see a problem. I have 2 cats and just like theoriginalquestmaker , one doesn't cover up and the other one does it for her. The one that doesn't is a long hair. Not sure if this makes a difference. She is also diabetic so it's easier to tell which is hers to check the urine test strips for too much sugar.

Is she an only cat? This is a sign of dominance. A cat will cover its poop in the wild in an attempt to bury his scent. Since your cat is an alpha cat she does not feel the need to hide her scent.

some cats just don;t do that why I don;t know I have two cats one covers the other does her job & leaves but at least they do it in the litter box
as long as your cat is in the box then be happy for that as lots of pets out there do it outside the box

It doesn't like the smell of the litter more than likely. Cats don't like litter that has an oder to it...sometimes we try to buy something that might make the house smell better. But they have no other place to go and know how to use it but don't want to cause the smell repels them. Kinda sums it up in a nut shell....LMAO

I have three cats. One doesn't cover but the other two do. In fact one of them buries the pooh of the one who doesn't. As long as they do their business in the box I don't see the problem.

Your cat may not feel safe at the litter box. If it does it's business in one area , move the box to that area.
or it may be showing it's displeasure about something

I think your cat needs to be trained, or probably he/she don't like your little box!

Who cares? you scoop it out of the litter box anyway right, well, now you can see it easier.
