If god really is so omnipotent and omniscient, what's he so jealous of?

Well, from the (serious) answers I've recieved, he sounds obsessive, controling and domineering. How many of you ladies would put up with a boyfriend that was like that?

God is jealous in the sense of what His name means. That He is a God that requires our undivided love, devotion, attention and worship in spirit and in truth. He so requires this because this is the way He feels about us and adores us so by sending us His one and only beloved beautiful son Jesus Christ to take our place of death on the cross. Because God gave us His all, He demands the same from us which I believe is a fair request, don't you?

You know, that's such a great question. I often think too about the almost "human" attributes that are given to God in the psalms, or whatever....when it talks of Him being a jealous God.

Let me give you an example of something that happened to me, that illuminated this kind of "holy" jealousy.

I am a Christian woman. One of the things I love is any movie that is done in period costume, i.e., late 1800's especially. I was at home, sitting in front of my TV watching a movie that had a scene in a Russian palace, it was a ball. The women were swirling around in satin, silk and ruffled lace; the men were in white ties and tails. There were crystal chandeliers and windows twelve feet high and golden chairs and beautiful flowers...and as I watched this, my heart just melted in adoration of all the sumptuousness of it.

All of a sudden, I felt this pang of jealousy within me. And it's source was not from me, it was from the God who loves me, who I belong to.

I was sitting in front of a television falling in love with an unreal illusion, my heart was completely given over to this scene in the movie, and God let me know, although He doesn't mind me liking things....that degree of love and desire that I was directing at that image on the screen; He wants that for Himself alone.

That is my experience of a jealous God. Meaning, He wants my complete love and devotion, He loves me so much, He wants all of me...He does not want any part of me wasted, going towards worldly, temporary things. I have never forgotten that day.

The jealousy you speak of is different from ours.

He created man so that man would worship him. Man has free will to do or worship whater he wants. however the jealousy is for example, at church:

You go to church to worship God, not to think about the football , basketball, soccer, or hockey game. You don't go to church because there is a church member you would really like to get to know. That is the Jealousy that God has towards man.

If I invite you to my house, and all you do is think about something else while you are there, or you are not there to visit me, but because some one else will be there, then I would feel neglected. hence i would be jealous of you having your attention towards something else. Although I would not be able to read your mind of your purpose, GOD CAN.

God Bless

I've heard it said many times that god is a jealous god, that god has readied the fires of hell for those who don't follow his son personality, that god punishes, that god has murdered/sent plagues and famines/banished people for eating apples...what a short-tempered angry dude that god is..frankly, that god sounds like a monster! Would I put up with that in a bf, friend, spouse, relative? Hell, no. And you've outlined the illogical belief perfectly, pointing out just one of the nonsensical ideas..so thanks.

the scriptures tell several stories and parables as Isreal being God's wife. And just as you see in so many relationships and marriages in the world today , Isreal commited adultrey against God by breaking her vows (laws, commitments, etc) toward him, just like everyday you see people commit adultry, dishonor their spouse or partner, it is only natural for jealousy to be evident and God identified himself in the same way. I know I would definetly be jealous if my significant other dishonored our bond or relationship. Hand clap for those people who remain faithful to their relationship or marriage and even those who may have failed but restored themselves to honor and commitment.

GOD is a jealous GOD. because we are to love one GOD and not put anything before him.

question: if you did everything for a person, like forgiving them when they have hurt you and lied to you, walked away from you, used you when they needed something and turned there back on you once they have gotten it. wouldn't you be jealous if they put someone else before you?

I guess he isn't as well endowed as the other Gods. That would make any guy jealous.

He's not real. He's just a reflection of humanity and so He has all the foibles and personality problems that we do.

Of us following pursuits that take us away from Him, that separate us from His love and take us away from our relationship with Him. He doesn't want to be separated from us, and since it happens on our side of the relationship, He doesn't like for us to be tempted..
