It could be that they are giving a number to mean a long amount of time. It could be that a year was measured differently in his time. It could be a translation issue. Maybe the world they are translating is supposed to be month and not year. If so, if he lived 950 years, it would actually be just over 79 years.

The problem is we are not sure that the Bible can completely be taken literally. When Genesis refers to 'days' I believe that it doesn not mean literally 'days' but can actually mean centuries or at least decades. Reason being, it is not possible that the earth was created in 7 literal days. So when the Bible may speal of Moses living for several hundred years, it may not mean that he literally lived for several hundred years. It may mean that his memory lived for several hundred years, or something to that affect. Furhtermore, our life expectancy today is much lower than it would have been in those times. There are so many more health risks and things that factor into our poor health these days such as cancer, polution, smog, car exhaust, preservatives in foods, and other chemicals in foods and cigarettes. It makes since that we do not live as long today as we would have years ago.

If you notice, those that lived before Noah lived for upwards of 900 years but after meat was added to the diet after the flood, the life span went down very fast. Moses was in that decline yet, not that far down the line from Noah, if you do the figuring and there was not as much pollution as there is today either and they did not eat all the fat that people do today. Those that live the longest are those that eat a vegetarian diet as they did before the flood. Even today, the healthiest people are those on a vegetarian diet and their life span is the greatest.

Moses only lived 120 year. After the flood the live span changed to around 120 years. Today the average life span is around 70 years and this is because of the condition of the world. If you want to live forever trust in what the Lord Jesus Christ did for you on the cross. He died for your sins.

OMG, you people are really dim. There are many cultures that attribute very long lives to ancestors or exaggerate time.
Humans have had an average lifespan of about 40 years up until the past 150 or so. As for there being more "poisons" now, this is unbeleivable ignorant. Modern medicine FAR outweighs the damage from modern poisons. Lifespans have increased steadily for the past 200-150 years.

I asked my friend, a Jewish Rabi, about this a few years ago. He said he could give me two answers and it was up to me and faith to decide.
1. The Torah, which the first 5 books of the old testament come from, is actually two Torahs. One is written and the other is oral.
Without the two the written one will be distorted, and likewise with the oral. We all know how easy it is with oral traditions to embellish to make the story "better." He said that back in those days elders were held in the highest regards. The average age back in the day would have been much lower...say 30's being "old age."
Wisdom comes with age and therefore the most wisest would have been those whom were the oldest.
If you have someone that is 900 years old they are held in the highest regard.
2.Moses was in direct contact with God, therefore he was special.
Think of him as the teachers pet.
It all comes down to what you believe. Oh...I asked him which he believe in...he shrugged and said, "why cant I believe in both, it doesn't alter my perception of my relationship with God?"

Moses and other ancient Biblical members lived during a time period and region where the moon was used as a primary means of tracking time.
The modern interpretation tends to lean in favor of extraordinary life-spans rather than realizing the difference ... for every "year" of Moses' life he only lived approximately 28 days (one lunar cycle).

This is a good question. One theory is that Moses ate the sacred manna as referred to in the bible. This supposedly was the philosophers stone that alchemists tried to re-create. There is a good on this subject, it is "The secret of the lost ark" written by Laurence Gardner. There is a man called David Hudson that has done a lot of research on this subject if you are interested.

That people lived extremely long time as told by religious books such as Moses is most likely a myth. Very unfortunately many religious teachings accrete extraneous "enhancements" in order to impress people so that they may follow the teachings.
