If you are talking about in the spring, when there are almost no birds all winter and then suddenly one day there are birds everywhere, this usually happens after a storm during migration season. It is called a "bird drop" (not to be confused with a "bird dropping"!) Thousands of birds are flying overhead at any given time during migration, but a storm will force them to the ground because they can't fly well in snow, rain, or high winds. When you wake up the next day, it almost seems like magic -- birds are singing everywhere. (Birds sing to declare and defend their territory, not because they are happy to be in your yard.) It has happened here on our farm several times and is quite dramatic.

Sometimes you see unusual species of birds after a bird drop, ones that normally nest farther north but got interrupted on their journey. (I saw my first Fox Sparrow this way -- normally they nest in Canada.) Usually these will be gone in a few days as the continue to migrate north. Other birds might decide that your yard is a pretty nice neighborhood and stay for the summer.

Maybe a better question is why do humans suddenly appear in their habitat?
