Take down the ugly, cheap mini-blinds. Put up vertical blinds. Cats (dogs too) can look out any time they want to, and your window treatments do not get damaged.

The best thing is to be sure to train your cats so they know where they can scratch, and where they can't. Use some specially made cat tape, cats hate anything sticky on their paws.

Second of all, make sure your cats nails are clipped. This helps a lot. You can also use some clear nail points which stop the destruction of claws, but still allow cats to scratch.

If you start scratching post training early, you should be okay. Make sure you have more than one scratching posts in various area of the house so the cats can sharpen their claws wheneve rthey can.

Scratching is a natural, healthy behavior for cats.

For a living room setting we have the vertical blinds that are long and open from let to right. They are a lot bigger, more durable, and swing very easily so that they don't get broken. Also cats have a fasination with windows, so we got our cats window seats at walmart for like $20. you just stick the seat up there and open the blinds. Also our one cat just sits on the back of the couch and sticks his head between the blinds. The seats work really well. This is what the seat looks like. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3635302

My cats usually bat at the blinds to see through the windows and once I raise the blind a little that usually takes care of the problem.

There are "caps" available that cover the claws and prevent from scratching. Replace every few months.

The other thing that has worked for my cat, is a squirt bottle. Cats don't like water. Threaten them with it, and they learn--Quick!

dont let an animal over run you show the animal who is boss...here is a way to be nice about it but still get your point across....get a squirt water bottle and if he/she does somthing you don't like them squirt him....more than likely he wont do it....my i would do that and if it didnt work then i would pop him on his booty as he is doing it so that he knows not too...animals are smart and know when they arent suppose to do something if you punish them just dont be to harsh or they will hate you
