Nope. The DiVinci Code is fiction. I've been told it's a good read, though. Just don't get your history from fiction.

DiVinnci Code is fiction. No one has ever claimed otherwise. You've asked the difficult question since it is a history-based question (not religious belief). It is all relative to who wrote it. However, suggest reading the Book of Mary in the Gnostic Gospels and anything else you can find that is credible. The most probable reason it, other Gnostic books and credible accounts, were not included in the Christian Bible is because the Catholics "in charge" of the day did not approve of it. Otherwise they were no different than other "witnesses" of the 1st and 2nd century that did get included. Proof? Remember even the Christian books of the New Testament do not always agree with each other; ie differing perspectives - not contradictory. No, I'm not a preacher but I do ask/seek some of the same type questions/answers.

The DaVinci code portrays a view of Christ's life based on extracanonical gospels and legends. Although the story that Dan Brown constructs based on art and documents is compelling, it has been discredited by historians, even liberal scholarship who do not beleive Jesus is who the Bible claims he is.

The canonical gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are quoted heavily by early church fathers incuding Irenaeus who lived in the 2nd Century and was a student just two generations removed from the Apostle John via Polycarp. Polycarp and other church fathers of the first century use the canonical gospels as scripture

The sciptures themselves say a lot about how they obtained the accounts in the gospels. Luke claims to have carefully compiled accounts from eyewitnesses to Jesus' life in the first chapter. Paul cites witnessses to the resurrection of Jesus in 1 Corinthians 15. Brown would say that much of what is in the Canon was written at a much later date than conservative Christian scholars date it, but I don't think this is possible if the first century and second century fathers were aluding to and directly quoting the Bible.

The evidence (internal and external) stacked up for the historicity of the Bible agaist psuedopigraphal gnostic writings is and spectral evidence overwhelms the latter. I personally would rather buy into more historic evidence than one mans interpretation of paintings and a select few questionable writings.

No. If you want the real story on Mary, you should read the one of the Gospels in the Bible. The Bible has never been disproved, it actually has always proved to be correct, so the Bible gives the most accurate account on Mary Magdalene and Jesus' relationship... which was strictly platonic. Jesus saved her and Mary loved him as her Lord and Savior, and He as His daughter, nothing more.

The traditional story of Mary Magdalene was that she was a prostitute living in the time of Jesus. She came to Jesus and repented her sins and became one of his followers. She was said to clean his feet with her own hair.

No one for sure knows whether or not Mary and Jesus had a romantic relationship. It is possible, due to the fact that many Jewish men were married and had children at Jesus' age. It is also possible that they were involved, but practiced celebacy and abstinence.

Nothing is impossible, but improbable. It could have happened. I suggest looking into both biblical and gnostic literature for details and hints.
