Nobody really cares how you are. It's just a passing comment. Next time somebody asks how you are, go into detail and watch the eye roll and them get all glassy eyed.

I belive it's because we don't want people feeling sorry for us and maybe because we don't want to talk about our problems because then it will make some of the hurt and maybe confussion come back, and you don't want to be upset so you just simply say that your fine even when your not so you can somewhat not have to think about what's wrong in your life for a short period of time!

We say we're fine because nobody really wants to know about how crappy our lives can be. Most people are just asking to be polite.

because it short and sweet and we dont want everybody know our business, if they were someone close to us they wouldn't even be asking how are u because they will probably already know
so unless u want to broadcast ur problems to every associate or person u know, I would just stick with the usual "Fine"

It's a rhetorical question and thus should be answered with another question...
"How are you?"
"How are YOU?"
That way, you don't have to say you're fine when you're really not.

"How are you?" is meant as a greeting like, "Hello" or "Good Afternoon". The response expected is ,"Fine".
