Researchers think there may be a genetic link and are now doing gene studies within families to find the source of the problem.
It is likely though that there may be more than one gene. I know that my child has suffered from it since birth and his father shows all the symptoms of it.
The controvercy is unfounded because I know most parents will try anything but put their children on Ritalin and will only try medication as a last resort. Though the drug is not perfect it is the only option for most parents of children with ADHD.

ADHD may have genetic links, but there are still studies going on to determine if there is in fact a link. Best bet would be to have the person checked by a neurologist to do some testing - all non invasive. This will give you an idea if it's really ADHD or some other variation (ADD, OCD, Behavioral Problems, etc.)

It is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, it is sometimes inherited but many people who get it have no family history of ADHD.
It is still under investigation at this time and most likely always will be.
Meds can be helpful for some but are not the answer for everyone as some people have reactions to meds. I hope this helps you out some

It's in the genes.The same one that causes reversing letters and numbers like calling ADDH " adhd"
But treat it with the medication your doctor prescribes

Contrary to what some of these other people have said, the cause is not known. Clearly it has something to do with brain structure and function, but it is not as simple as a chemical imbalance, and it is not entirely genetic.
