(The GoArts.org website, as you'll see, redirects you to a page about texbooks and stuff going on just in Texas.)
I recommend starting with these sites.

A quote from the last site, "VH1 Save the Music":
<
Research has shown that musical study develops critical thinking and self discipline skills and improves a child's early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities, self-esteem, SAT scores, ability to work in teams, spatial reasoning skills, and school attendance. Also, researchers have found that children involved with music education are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college, and are less likely to be involved with gangs and substance abuse. >>
My own two children would have been lost without music education. We're from a school system this is ranked tops in the nation for music education.
Good luck! You'll need it.

Before I answer-I must comment on the "Jenny" response: What are you some sort of artistic terrorist? The Arts are a very necessary thing to have both in school and out in the real world! Every time, you turn on your radio or television MUSIC is a part of that experience. You are the only one who SHOULDN'T have endeavored to answer the question. Obviously you are either disgruntled or failed some of your elective subjects in school!
My answer-Try to suggest to the school board via the instructors, the principals, etc. that you all do more benefits. That not only helps raise money for the programs, but it raises public awareness. You will probably draw some support from philanthropists who either have enjoyed these programs themselves during their school experience or just have a soft spot in their heart and a genuine love for music!

Music (especially choirs, bands and orchestras) teaches students how to work cooperatively for a common goal. Studies have shown that learning to read music increases learning skills in other areas as well as raising IQ.
Teachers must be well-prepared and talented in their major instrument. They must teach a well-rounded program including many types of music. They must never accept an average performance as "good enough."
Parents must become involved with booster clubs, attending school board of education meetings, and school committees. Get publicity for the program. Try to get pictures of the students and teacher in local newspapers. Advertise concerts in the newspaper, on the local radio and by posting announcements on public bulletin boards. Make sure the school board is aware of any accomplishments the music department receives both from groups and individuals.

music has not caused people not to be able to spell. If anything, kids who are involved with music tend to score higher on the SAT and ACT tests.
The problem with education today (speaking very generally) is parents who have let the kids run everything in the house and tell their parents what to do. Then the kid comes to school and wants to do only what they want to do, with no respect for authority.
In America every child has the right to an education. The sad thing is that some parents/children don't care that they have the right and the privelidge. In many countries children don't even have the chance to attend school or have to pay (private) for a decent education. In some countries, students have to pass tests in order to move on to the next grade level.
The problem, my friends, is not music in the schools, but apathy among the masses.

Music departments SHOULD be cut from schools. Have you read the stuff here? No one can spell or form correct sentences. What good is playing a flute going to be for you when you enter the job market? Students need to learn to read, write, and work out complex math problems to compete in the job market. Get rid of music programs and all the other bogus subjects and teach our kids some valuable skills that will be of use to them.

Music is improves all aspects of our children's lives. It is imperative that it is not cut from our public school system. There are in fact National Standards that all music school teachers must adhere too, http://www.menc.org/publication/books/standards.htm
Music programs need to adapt themselves to be appealing to the students. Boards react to numbers, if the music program has hundreds of students enrolled, there is no way they will cut the program.
Go to school board meetings. Express your views using numbers. Talk to the music teachers, implement programs that will appeal to students, ex. improv. workshops, fiddle club, jazz band, music software classes.
With people like you and me out there fighting for the program, it will persevere. Thank you for caring

Get the parents involved. Form a booster club. Get parents to come to concerts. Show the schools that the parents want it, and what the parents want, they should get. In general, kids who have music and the support of their parents do well in other aspects of their lives, INCLUDING MATH CLASS, too.

have all radio stations, television stations, recitals, and anything else that include music to discontinue and see how it effects everyone and then we will see how important music is to our world.
