I have a family of five and we usually never participate in sweepstakes or vacation giveaways because its always for "A family of 4" and not five! Its very aggravating. Why cant they just offer an add-on offer that we could pay for to include the fifth family member?

It really is a mixture of things. The average family size is usually around four. Also, most hotel rooms only accomodate four, so that is what is included in the package. They would either have to provide a suite, a larger room that accomodates five, or offer two rooms to accomodate larger families.

In most cases, you would probably be able to add the extra family member on or add a hotel room on. I would enter the sweepstakes, if you win, then you can worry about the additional person.

Well, since the average family is 2 adults and 2 kids, that is four people. If you win the contest, you can usually contact the company that is providing the prize and they can help you get a fifth ticket that you pay for.

That is a good point and should be brought up to prize companies because they could make some money! I think they look at the size of the average family.

Usually packages come in even numbers. 2 beds, a car for 4 comfortably. BTW, stop being so cheap. If you won for 4, you'd only have to pay for an extra one. Hello....

I won a Las Vegas package for a couple. But I wanted to go with a bunch of guys. So, we just split the difference. Just because you won for 4 does not mean they preclude you from including an extra person. Geez.

Statistics. According to the number crunchers and poll takers, an average family numbers four.: A mother, a father, a son and a daugther. Course, as with all things, families tend to break that rule regularly.

Actually I had never thought of that before, but I agree with you. I'm sure they had to come up with a number and four was a good start - but even if you do win something for 4, you can always add the 5th yourself.

That's probably an average family size, and you probably could pay for a fifth family member if you won, but you probably won't ever win. I never do.
