Why was it lousy? Was it because you are poor and you didn't want to spend money on fun stuff? Did you go to Vegas and lose your rent money? Was the weather bad? Did you get mugged?

You told all your friends and co-workers and the homeless bums on the street that you were going on vacation so when you see them they expect to hear that you had a good time. Lie damn it! Just tell them that you had the vacation that you wanted to have. Nobody will know the difference.

Tell the truth. But try to make it an amusing story. You are not the only person to have a lousy vacation. People will enjoy the humorous aspect and experience schadenfreud over your misery.

I would be honest about it. If you don't want to burden them with all the bad news, tell them "it could have been better" and wait to see if they ask you questions about that comment. Some people really DON'T want to know; they are just asking to be friendly in conversation.

Think of it this way - If the hotel had lousy service, wouldn't you want one of your friends to avoid staying at the same place and being subjected to the lousy service as well? We learn from our friends experiences.

Definitely tell the truth. I don't know what happened on the trip, but it could prevent someone close to you from doing the exact same thing. I don't think I would tell them every single thing that went wrong, but just tell them it wasn't what was expected or, you don't plan to go back, etc. Then, if they want to know more about it, you can tell them.

Tell the truth to the people you know will care enough to listen. It'll make you feel better to vent.

Aww, sorry to hear that. It has been my experience that most people aren't that interested in hearing about other's vacations BUT love to brag about their own..endlessly. I would just say "it's good to be back" or even "it was not what I hoped it would be".
