Aside from the great American babysitter (the television?)

My youngest boy is 4, but when he was 3, his favorite toys were the ones where he could put things together himself. (Actually they are still his favorite.) Plastic train sets (Geotrax), the Thomas the Tank Engine sets, puzzles, building blocks. If you're 3 year old is responsible enough to handle small toys, there are some really cool marble sets that you stack and build (see links below). We bought 2 sets, and the older kids love playing with it too (especially with the 4 year old.) She may need some help with it, but it would be fun to build together.

Other fun activities include clay or playdough, the precolored water color sheets that you can use with just q-tips and water and the color is already in the sheets.

For outdoor fun, bubbles are always a big hit! You can even get an automatic one. Sidewalk Chalk is another fun outdoor activity. What 3-year old wouldn't love a little sandbox?

So there are just a few ideas.

Good luck.

Play, Play, Play.... There are so may things you could do. This age is so great
They are willing to learn anything. Real helpful they are. They are such a joy. I have 2, three year old grandchildren and grown sons . I make a game of everything. Make them feel special and apart of the family. I fold laundry and teach them to fold there socks then we empty the laundry basket and toss the socks into them then we race which they win , to put the socks away, they help me do all chores just little things, and then when we are done we read lots of books, walks in the yard, when all else fails then we stick in an educational tape, I like veggie tales. art projects are good too finger painting. I also have a button jar and they like to empty it and put them back in sometimes we count them sometimes we sort by color shape, ect. a big dirt pile in the back yard with old pots and pans will keep a child busy for hours and over flow their imagination. Be creative. Love them and give them plenty of attention. They are so entertaining at this age, ask them questions see what the answers are. They will sup rise you.

Take them on a kitty patrol. Walk through the neighborhood searching for kitties - or bugs or puppies. Pretend you're the crocodile hunter (or kitty hunter) and make an expedition out of it. Do an arts and crafts project and make kitty patrol badges to wear. You can scour the same parts of the neighborhood again and again because the animals aren't always in the same place or explore new neighborhoods. Give the kitties that you see names and when you're walking you can ask "do you think we'll find white kittie out today?" When you get home you can draw pictures of the kitties that you saw. If you go on a bug hunt you can get a reference book to look up and name the bugs that you found on the hunt.

I take my 3 year old to the park and when she comes home we watch Barney and friends as well as Teletubbies. I find that she is also excited by Dora and Diego. I also have her on a Series of tapes by an animal like thingie called Muzzy and she is learning french. You should try some of these things. She is 3 and she has calmed down a lot because of the activities that I have planned for her throughout the day.

You can go to a library to read some age appropriate books, you can go to the park, you can go to the art store to buy some projects for 3 year old.
You can cook with him a cake or recipes for kids.
You can print some pages for him to color them.
You can do puzzles with him, play outside with a ball, go to the playground, go to a children's museum, take him for a walk to look at the flowers, the lake, the ducks, the clouds, to feel the air.

There is a lot of activities to do with a 3 year old kid.

There's plenty you can do with them especially now that it's summer. Go for walks and let them collect leaves and flowers and things like that. You could also do things inside like bake cookies or make home-made popsicles with kool-aid. Try letting them close the curtains in the living room and let them throw pillows and blankets on the floor then pop some popcorn and let them watch a movie---closing the curtains and having pillows and blankets makes it nice and cozy which is great on a hot summer day. Hope this helped!

Lots and Lots of ACTIVITIES! ^_^

If you're looking for inside activities, try projects that are "messy". Play dough, finger paints, baking/cooking, clay, sand, or rice are fun hands-on activities. Dress-up is popular in my home as well as bubbles (in and out of the bath).
Outside activities could include the ideas mentioned above, plus ball play, tag, go to your local playground, and/or kite flying.

The best thing is to have a schedule then, take your child on outings and spend time playing or doing things with them. My children loved helping me and making things. A happy child is enjoyable to be around and learns better.
