I would say that the most important thing is who is running the church. Do you agree with their convictions and get a good feeling around them.Choose the one that gives you the best feeling inside and makes you feel welcome.

It depends on your needs. But at minimum the church should teach from the bible. Period
Other important things to look for are:
Functions provided with in the church, sense of community amont it's members, The church leaders and their integrity and their goals for the church. Wether the minister and other leaders are willing to tackle difficult and contraversial issues within the church. Counseling: Are your church leaders easily accessible for counseling and support during the more difficult times in your life.
Membership Make Up: How diverse are the members?
And last but not least. Do you fit it. Do you feel comfortable with the people there and Do you feel like this is a place where you would like to contribute your time, learn from, grow with, and develop your relationship with God
(assuming you are speaking of a christian church)

- Doctrine
- Fellowship
The Church you go to must have a Doctrine of truth based on the bible not on anything else man made. The Fellowship in a church is very important. The church should feel like a second family, you should be able to speak to a pastor as if he was your father, or your best friend, he should always be up for your best interest in your spiritual and you human life.

Go a few times, see if you like the congregation and the minister, and ask questions about times for the services, other church functions you enjoy, and so forth.
If by "church" you mean a faith, and not just a place, then you'll need to do a bit more work. Look into the tenets of the faiths that interest you and see which ones you're most comfortable with. :)

Read James 1:5. In other words pray with a contrite heart and often. Perhaps you could even fast to show God how strong you feel about finding his true church. Most importantly God wants you to show yourself approved, so don't believe something cause someone tells you it to be true.
To girl above: Um i'm not sure what kind of churches you go to but the person running the church should be God.

When I'm going for a brand new church, I always ask the same questions:
1. Is your god vengeful or jealous?
2. Has he asked his people to massacre their neighbors?
3. Does he drown a lot of people if they disobey him?
4. Can what he said be interpreted in 45 gazillion ways?
5. Does he think it's a cool idea to kill his/her son?
If the answer is "yes" to any of these, I just say, "Sorry, been there, done that," drop a confederate note in the basket, & hit the road.

Make sure their teachings are IN THE BIBLE!!!! Also, make sure everyone uses their bible in church, not just the priest. Ask random members of the church a question, if they're being taught exactly what the bible says they'll all have the same answer, if they all have completely different answers then they don't know what the heck they're being taught! ALWAYS MAKE SURE WHAT THEY TEACH IS IN THE BIBLE is the most important one!

Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is no more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifiying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory to itself than this thing called Christianity. Too absurd for belief, too impossible to convince, and too inconsistent for practice, it renders the heart torpid or produces only atheists or fanatics. As an engine of power, it serves the purpose of despotism, and as ameans of wealth, the avarice of priests, but so far as respects the good of man in general it leads to nothing here or hereafter.

Depends on what religion you are. Doctrine as others have said may not be the sum result of your search. Because church doesn't only imply a place to worship Christ. Tell us what religion you are or what religion you would like to be a part of.
