Students should be allowed to carry a cellular phone with them during school hours. To prevent disruption of class the phones should always be off. They should not use the phone unless they are on break or it is an emergency. Not a "Oh my goodness, my hair is a mess" emergency, but a true emergency. We have school violence and natural disasters, things that happen not on the average day, but a parent or guardian does feel more at ease believing that if they can find their child or reassure them. So I say allow cell phones, but be responsible. Don't disrupt the class.

Cell phones should not be allowed in school. Keeping them in students vehicles are one thing, but they don't need them in school. If any important information that needs to be relayed to the students can be relayed by the use of the front office, that's one of the reasons the office staff is there. Anything that doesn't need immediate attention can simply wait until the student gets out of school or home. Students went for years without cell phones, and the world will not stop if they go 6 or 7 hours with them today.

I think first you need to learn how to spell cell phone. Once you figure that out, you'll be ready for this answer. I think cell phones should not be allowed in school. If there are emergencies, a parent can almost just as easily contact the school as they can the child. Cell phones are disruptive to teachers and distracting to students, who use them more to chat with their friends and play games than for emergencies.

This is actually a difficult situation these days. My middle school son does have a cell phone because he switches between 2 homes and has been known to not be picked up from school or athletic practice because of his dad's work schedule changing . Fortunately, my son is still very reliable and makes sure it is off during school as it would be taken away. However, he thinks that talking on the cell phone at school is not the problem; what he sees is texting - whether it be to someone in the same class or another one. Students are talking to their friends via texting and not to say anything important. I believe that it is disrupting to other students and most certainly to the ones involved. As a teacher myself, I am glad that I teach kindergarten and don't have to deal with that (yet!) because it would drive me crazy and take away from instructional time to deal with it. As a parent, I am glad that I have a child that I can still trust (remember, he's not in high school yet!). I think the responsibility lies heavily with the parent who can monitor the cell phone use and take it away if they find their child is using it during school hours. Check the phone bill! It is much like monitoring children's internet use - all sites my son uses each week are emailed to me. Then I can check them out and take away the use of the computer if anything is there that I find inappropriate. Parents need to be more involved in what their children are doing - not just academically, socially, and in sports, but in internet, web-cam, and cell phone use. A lot of kids are getting caught up in the wrong thing this way. But, since schools can't control the parents, I think taking them away is the best option and only returning them to the parent so they are made aware of what is going on. I think as much of this as possible needs to be put back on the parents. I feel children in school be allowed to have them in middle and high school, but that they are not permitted to be on during school hours. If they are caught with it on, take the phone away to give to the parent and suspend the child. Make the parents wake up! I do feel that exceptions should be made in extreme cases; I heard of a student in another state that went to high school with my stepdaughter. There was a big uproar in town because a student was taking a call (apparently not during class but waiting outside the classroom) and got his phone taken away. Even after the school found out that this was the only time his mother could call from Iraq where she was stationed, they wouldn't return his phone because of the school policy. I think that in this case an exception should definitely be made! Just have the student go to the office at the appointed time so he can talk to his mom. Life is difficult enough without taking away that connection.

No. Children are in school to learn and shouldn't have the time to be worrying about their cell phones. Children attended school long before cell phones were invented and had no trouble getting through the day without communicating with their parents or other people.

No I do not believe that cell phones should be allowed in schools. Students should be concentrating on their education and not on their cell phones. In an emergency, students can always be contacted through the schools office. Parents should just make sure that they keep the school phone number available for emergencies. Mine is programmed into my cell phone for just such an event.

Cell phones should be allowed, but should only be used before, between, and after classes and during lunch break. My daughter has had to reach me after school when her ride is late or to let me know that she is going to walk home with a friend, etc.

Yes....T o some extent that is
1.not to be seen during periods.
2.Only to be used before school,at break, and after school.
3.When used during school hours it should be taken away.
Main point to be used but not in a way in which it desrupts the class or drives the students attention away.

First of all, I am a high school student, and at my school, they are allowed, but it depends on the teacher if you can have out on your desk during the period, or not. Most teachers don't say anything as long as it doesn't ring during class, EXCEPT during exams, those are the only times they ask us to put our phones away, but other than those exceptions, we are allowed to have them out on our desk, and are able to text if we aren't doing anything. But we, as students, have the courtesy, to put them away during instruction time, and the teachers don't mind us using them after they have finished lecturing, and we have finished all of our work. So I think that they should be allowed anywhere.

No. There is no need for a student to have a cell phone in school. If a parent needs to get ahold of a student, they can call the main office. If a student needs to get ahold of a parent, there should be phones available to students for that purpose.
