When buying wine (or champagne) price is mainly a function of availability not quality. There are many excellent and affordable choices. I would start out by selecting something that was made from locally grown grapes. That way it can be relatively rare but you are not paying for worldwide distribution. The champagne served at most weddings is relatively sweet for my taste, like an Asti Spumante. I prefer something more dry or even brut which means extra dry. Your second choice depends on the food but I would go with a basic French red table wine . If it says produce of France or Italy, it is usually decent. Make sure you only buy real bottles, not jugs or boxes! Finally, if you want to be more adventurous, wines from Chile and Australia are very popular.

expensive doesn't necessarily mean better! i just got married recently and most of our guests were not wine (or champagne) experts or connoisseurs. we had both red and white wines for each table and had sparkling wine for the toasts; we also kept sparkling apple cider for strictly non-alcoholic (who invited them!?!--lol) guests. good rule is to buy enough wine and champagne for everyone!

For a sparkler, try any Italian Asti Spumante; they are generally somewhat sweet, so even the non-wine-drinkers can handle them.
For non-sparklers, try a mix of French Bordeaux (Claret) for the serious connoisseurs and German Spatlese Rieslings for the less-serious drinkers.

Cooks Champange is a good and relatively cheap brand. I used it for my wedding. If you are having champange you don't really need a sparkling wine. Maybe a red wine . . . If you have Trader Joes, they have 2 buck chuck . . that one is cheap and good!!
