I have been looking for a Pekingese in the NY area for a couple of months now with NO luck. I guess they are not common dogs and not as plentiful as the Maltese or Yorkies. Anyhow, recently I've decided to give the Shih Tzu a shot as well. Does anyone know what some differences between the Pekingese and Shih Tzu's are? For some reason Shih Tzus are also pretty plentiful but I want to find one from a reputable breeder.

Which breed is usually smaller in size. I read that Pekes are not barkers. Is this true of the Shih Tzu as well? I had a Maltese once that wasnt too people friendly and bites on occasion, do Shih Tzus and Pekes have this problem as well? Pekes shed, but Shih Tzu's dont? is this true?

And if anyone knows where I can get a Peke or Shih Tzu in the NYC area, could you please let me know? As I do not like to buy from out of state and have my puppy "shipped".

THANKS!!!!

ive ahd both. should be able to find one --epsecially through animal rescue...try pekingnese rescue NY as a search or shih tzu as a searh

they are both about the same size dog...the shih tzu can egt bigger...and you cna more or less trian them to not bark...mine barks maybe once a day...(shih tzu that is).

and as for biting...that usually happens when a dog is mistreated...i havnet had that problem....but of the two id bet pekingese ar less likely to ever do it

thrid url below has pekingnese puppy s in ny

Sounds like you've done a lot of research - good job! You definitely don't want to get a dog shipped to you sight unseen! Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the Peke breed club on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

In my opinion, Pekes are the better dog. Calmer, quieter, less aggressive and require less grooming. The Peke does shed a bit and requires brushing, but not as much as the Shih tzu. You can have a Shih tzu clipped short by a groomer, but their coats will tend to mat easily every time it rains. Shih tzus are better watchdogs, but they can be scrappy and nippy and are prone to bark.

If you can't find a Peke, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel would be an excellent choice. They are very sweet and calm dogs.

BEFORE you get any dog, I'd also suggest reading some really good books on training. Try not to do it randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites:
What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin

Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on tv.

More closely related to te Pekingese than the Shih Tzu is the Pug. The peke and pug are actually very closely related. Both of the have problems their upper respiratory tract due to being brachiocephalic (short faced, in more layman's terms). Ideally, it is best to frequent shelters around you and look for the dog by ideal size instead of ideal breed. Mixed breeds tend to be healthier overall by the phenomena known as "hybrid vigor". However, if you do wan't a pure-bred dog, I would still look at shelters. Almost 1/2 of the dogs that enter shelters every year are listed as purebred dogs.

Know what specifically is a concern to you, whether it is vocalization, shedding, independence, etc. Buying from a breeder isn't the most responsible choice, as there are always animals in a shelter that need hoes. The novelty of owning a puppy wears off faster than you can imagine. Adult dogs make better pets in general because they seem to be more understanding of the logic behind house training, where as puppies see it as soe grandeous inconvenience to the. Also, in adult dog, you have the temperment displayed. With puppies, you don't know if they are going togrow up to be affectionate, or very distant or even violent dogs.

Best of luck...

I have 3 pekinese and 1 shih tzu as far as the barking my 4 year old pek does not bark but the two pek pups do bark. The shih tzu is very calm and loving. In my eyes they are they are both the best breeds. My peks are smaller than my shih tzu. The peks shed but the shih tzu does not but he has to be bathed constantly and brushed because of the long hair. None of my dogs bite and are well behaved out of the house and around other people. Good luck on your search for your new companion!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/05juU

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Try locating one with Petfinder.com. Or check to see if there is a local rescue group. Rescue groups are often the best place to seek advice regarding a particular breed, as that is why many of them end up abandoned, the people were not getting what they were expecting. They can really helpl you to see if this kind of dog will be one that you will be happy with.

i have a shih tzu and i wish i didn't. he is sooo jealous of my daughter and my cat. He sheds like crazy, will not go to the bathroom outside, doesn't listen for ****. He also smells bad all the time. He goes to the groomer for a bath and a clipping every other Monday and be Wednesday he is stinky all over again. i would get rid of him but i don't have the heart to. my advice is to get a cat and forget about the dogs.
