My son's teacher gave all the students wonderful presents. Each one was tailored to what they each like. Joey got a beach bucket with a shovel in blue *his fav color* for our shore house, and there was a picutre disc with pictures of him and his classmates.

I feel terrible that I didnt buy anything for her, but I didnt think parents did that sort of thing.

I feel terrible, and I feel like I just made her feel underappreciated.

Did you buy anything, and what was it? If not, why not?

I did email the teacher, and thanked her and told her what a wonderful job she did. He is in kindergarten so she taught him everything he will need to know in order to learn. Reading, writing... vowels, numbers..

the list is endless.

she was very appreciative of the email.

Worry less about the material things... a personal thank you note does wonders to feel appreciated. If you feel presured to give a gift, add a $5 or $10 gift card with your note. Involve your son in the process.

I always send Christmas gifts for my children's teachers every year and for the special teachers that have really helped my children I give them end of the year thank you gifts. Here are some ideas:
1. Gift cards from department stores where they can buy for themselves or for their classroom.

2. A quilt made from handprints of each child in the classroom and a picture with the child's signature.

3. Candles
4. Things to place on their desk or in the classroom.
5. A collage of notes from both students in the class and their parents saying what they liked best about the year or something special they liked about the teacher.

6. A box filled with post-it notes, pencils, pens (red, black and blue), highlighter, chalk, etc. and add one special item just for the teacher.

7. A calendar made of pictures from the students in this year's class to start off next year with. It reminds the teacher of the students in her class and the other kids enjoy looking at it to see what types of things were done in the classroom the year before and to see their friends.

8. Plants

9. Every year if the teacher has done a good job, I write a letter to the Super Intendentant of schools and the Principal praising the teacher. Most parents only complain, but never let the school board know how well the teacher is doing. This is still something you could do now and I am sure the teacher will be very surprised and appreciative.

Gift giving to teachers is always weird. On the last day of school I bought my 4th grade teacher some candy dish (well my mom bought it).
It turns out she wasn't there, but a substitue. Being the wee one that I was I gave it to her and yah that created a lot of confusion.

Gift-giving to teachers is always optional. In fact, unless you really like the teacher (or you have the money) gift-giving at the end of the term isn't necessary or common. I have never ever seen someone give a gift to a teacher on the last day.

If you are talking holidays, birthdays...that's different and use your own discretion.

Don't feel bad, the teacher might have just wanted to do something nice. Gift-giving doesn't have to be reciprocal. She/he might have done it knowing no one else would be giving back.

What you can do though is write a really nice thank you card and send it to the teacher. You can even write about feeling bad for not getting them a gift if you want. They will appreciate the card and the thought much more than any silly gift :)

I have always at the end of the year took a collection from parents and we would buy 1 gift from the class. I made a quilt with all the kids hand prints and names on it. I video the kids and have each one be a reporter and ask what was there favorite part of the year and then I let them say good bye in there own way I also listen thru out the year to them like son came home and said his teacher collected pigs so I always would pick up something small when i saw it for a gift basket at the end of the year.

You don't have to give the teacher a present, although some parents do.

One very meaningful gift that would mean a lot to the teacher would be for you to write a letter to the teacher (and send a copy to the principal!) telling you how much it meant for your child to have spent the year in his or her class. Also, have your child write a letter of his own to the teacher.

Whatever you do, don't buy mugs or things like that which say "Teacher" on them. We get a way too many of those, and after a few years in the classroom, we run out of ways to use those things.

When my kids were in elementary school, I usually gave the teachers a gift card worth about $5 to the local video store since all of my children's teachers had children of their own. I thought that would be something that they could share with their whole family.

For kids in middle school or high school, I don't give gifts to the teachers.

I am a qualified teacher and also now a mum.

I found as a teacher that receiving from students was always unexpected but very morale boosting

so i do try and give the teacher a present at Christmas and when the end of the year is up as well as a Christmas card.

teachers don't expect things from their students as a rule but do accept and welcome things as often teachers efforts can appear to be underappreciated

I always got something for the teacher at the end of the year. It's a way to say thank you. Parents would either pitch in for a gift certificate or I'd buy a plant/flowers.

Yes I usually buy my sons teacher a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble for Christmas and then a small gift at the end of the year like another gift certificate or something for outdoors or even flowers. I also buy something for his school nurse. It's just a token of my appriciation for taking good care of Anthony all year.

I have before. If you really care about the teacher and enjoy their friendship and ways of teaching then I would suggest you should. Besides, it doesnt hurt to keep them as a connection because later on when you need rec. letters to get into college they will write nice things.

Oh, for a guy a nice card would be nice. For a woman teacher an apple means ALOT. My spanish teacher loved it lol,

I always get the teacher and card for every holiday and let my son write in it. And at Christmas and the end of the year. I make her something. This year I got a pen and journal and put beads on them. If I know the teachers favorite color then I try to use those colored beads. And I always get them a card for their birthday.

We usually get something for the teachers especially if they were really nice. We would either get like a little teacher's book or a #1 teacher something or other or even a picture frame with a picture of the student.

If we didn't it was beacuse we didn't like the teacher very much.
(sorry for all you teachers out there)
