Americans fail geography because they do not study it. Part of that may be due to a certain ethno-centrism where they think they are the center of the world and the rest really doesn't much matter. Part of it may be because schools are "constipated." By that, I mean so many programs are being added to the curriculum but nothing is coming out. The day in school is only so long and when a great deal of time is spent just trying to deal with problem students and all the extra non-academic programs (it is a sad state of affairs when schools must pick up the slack in teaching things that should be taught at home and in the community) something must give. Cursive handwriting along with history are other subjects that have fallen by the wayside in school. And part of the problem may be that it is just plain hard work to study. Many young people find studying maps and countries and facts to be dull compared to watching television or playing video games.

I think this answer has been addressed by other folks as well, albeit rudely. Unfortunately, kids are not disciplined enough anymore, in school or at home. Ergo, the temptation to do other things besides studying takes over. I was raised in a very disciplined home, given corporal punishment (rarely), and when I turned 16, I got a job on my own will because of my upbringing. I have graduated college, mastered the English lexicon, am very geographically knowledgeable, culturally well-rounded, and successful because I made the effort to go down the path of MOST resistance. I can understand the other users making fun of the misspelling, and being angry. It's frustrating to see such a supposedly successful and powerful country succumb to absolute ignorance. I think a lot has to do with our tolerance of the popular hip-hop culture. It's just a matter of time before the third world countries take us over economically, because they are making strides in improving themselves, whereas we have become lazy, apathetic, and ignorant.

Geography is touched on when learning history and social studies. Many of our High Schools rarely cover geography as a course in itself. With the world changing as quickly as it has been over the past decade it may be tougher to keep up for some. Most basic geography is covered in the elementary school levels, so most americans should at the very least know there own country.

First of all, don't pay attention to answers that focus on your spelling or treat you badly. I read through all the answers and found mistakes in spelling and grammar. It's great that you are trying to learn English. I wish some Americans would (along with some basic manners).

I taught 7th and 8th grade. I told the class that we would learn about the world before we started to study U.S. or World History. They were reluctant at first, but as we read news reports from around the world, they were ecstatic that they knew where these places were located. Kids like to know things!!

Today's focus in education is Math, Science, and Language Arts. I think we shortchange our children when we forget to let them know that it is a big world out there.

You probably mean why Americans fail geography?
They have no interest in other countries or cultures. No genuine interest, that is. Being raised by the pop culture many youngsters don't read, don't think about nothing else but sex and pleasures, have no curiosity about life like in its fullest. They are not challenged to think at all: "life is good as it is no need to overdo it".
And this tendency is spreading throughout the world along with American pop culture and Hollywood making its approach.
Unless it changes young Americans will fail geography.
Of course I am talking about the majority because there is a lot of people who are nothing like that. But majority prevails.

Because it is not a third world developing country depending on other countries.
Most of the people in this country have believed that the world begins and ends with the US (not entirely false).
But, things are changing now and the schools are teaching a lot more in geography than they did before. There is a lot of diversity and kids are being introduced to different people and cultures and foods etc.

As evidenced by your spelling, partly because they can't spell. But seriously America and Americans, by the very nature of their belief in "manifest destiny" and that they are the leaders of the world do not have the interest in learning about other people and places. That said I have no idea why Americans know little about their own geography or that of their biggest trading partner (Canada in case you didn't know). I find it disconcerting that some Americans can name all kinds of Presidents but not where Ottawa or Toronto are, or for that matter Barcelona.

The video is designed to make Americans look stupid. Those people may have done exactly that, but there were undoubtedly dozens of others with plenty of knowledge who were simply not included because they didn't make for a humorous clip.

And in terms of education worldwide, we're still high on the list. We have a very literate public (99% of American are literate) and, for the most part, a very educated public. You can find ignorant people in any country if you're out looking for them.

Why do they fail "spelling"? Did you mean to write "fail"? To answer that question, I think there is not enough emphasis in school to learn about geography. Most Americans don't even know how many states there are! By the way, the answer is 50.

Because it's not taught well in schools. If you're lucky you get a semester or at most 2 of world history and that mostly focuses on Western Civilization. The rest becomes a black hole for most people who don't care enough to learn more than they absolutely have to to pass high school.
