First of all, what is your living situation? If you have small children some breeds of small dogs are not right. Children tend to roughhouse, and small children aren't right for some breeds of dogs.
I've seen so much information about my favorite toy breed, I decided I needed to clear this up. Chihuahuas are not mean tempered. They can be if they are not socialized and many are that way because they are never taught basic dog manners. Chihuahuas do bond to one or two people exclusively, but if socialized correctly and early they can be friendly pets. I love chihuahuas and hate seeing the breed name dragged through the mud because of a couple bad examples of the breed.
Some toy breeds that will be around 3-10 pounds:
1. Chihuahuas (Under 6 lbs for a true chi)
2. Pugs
3. Papillion
4. Miniature Pincher
5.Japanese Chin
6. Boston Terrier
7.Toy Manchester Terrier
8. Maltese
9. Affenpincher
10. Pekingese
I strongly suggest a dog guide if you are a novice owner to determine the proper breed type. You need to decide how trainable, good with children, allergenic, and other factors for picking out a dog. Some breed types are better for novice owners, and some only for advanced dog owners.
Good luck!

I recently got into small dogs as well. I have a miniature rat terrier. She is small. The male is a little bigger. I am actually breeding them. She should have her first litter in a few months. I am hoping they are small like her! If you want pictures let me know. Maybe they will help you decide on a pet for yourself. They are very happy fun going dogs. Little maintenance. They DO want to go with you everywhere though!!

I have a Mini Schnauzer. She is the scale of an entire grown cat. She sleeps on the foot of our mattress, and hardly ever takes up any room in any respect in our queen measurement mattress. The breed does now not shed, that is best for humans with allergic reactions. She does must be shaved each 2 to 3 months to hold it maintained. I do it myself, however a few humans decide to convey their puppy to a groomer. She has a best persona. She loves concentration and affection, which she offers again in go back. She is pleasant and is best with youngsters, and our cats. The breed does make a well watch puppy. They are all bark, however would not have an inclination to chunk. They also are an excessively wise breed and are effortlessly knowledgeable. My puppy is aware such a lot of phrases, and listens to instructions. She is aware of lot's of methods. She loves to head for walks and enjoys gambling. She could be very well approximately using in automobiles. She loves to bite, however most effective chews the bones that I furnish for her. I hold her in a giant crate whilst I cross out. The most effective down fall together with her is that she will likely be damaging if I am out of the condo. She will become bored and lonely and bite matters she won't. To restrict this, she is stored competently in her crate. Otherwise, she is the first-class puppy I have had the delight of figuring out. I incredibly suggest this breed!

Size shouldn't be your only criteria when selecting a dog! Many small dogs are nippy, barking little monsters - while big dogs like Borzois and Greyhounds sleep all day and you never know they're around.
Go to www.akc.org and you can find out the sizes of every breed.

The list goes on and on. Check out the American Kennel Club's web site. Look at the "toy" group because they are all small dogs.

chihuahuas, yorkshire terrier, alot of your mutt dogs, it depends on just how small you want it to stay. most of your toy or miniture breeds don't grow over 8 inches in height but can still be hefty such as your boston terriers. best thing to do is to check out the AKC website for all breeds that are registered or check for mutt dogs at your local shelter, they make great pets.

You should look at www.akc.org site. They list breed size and breed temperament. Definitely do your research before getting a dog! Once you know the breed you like, call your vet for questions to ask about the breed if you are buying or check out www.petfinder.com to adopt.
