against religion and have it roll off of people? It's scary. It was scary to think America would re-elect GW Bush. It makes me feel very lonely. Kind of like America is half Killer Clowns from Outer Space.

Randy, you should find argument enough against religion when you look around. I would be embarassed to have logic spoon fed to me and spit it out.

Okay, Randy and Don. This is the thing...my best guess is that I am completely capable of discerning the truth out of what I've been shown so far in life. I trust myself. My best guess is that I'm a smart enough and fair enough individual to trust my best guess about religion vs. science. You don't know anything about the Bible I don't, and I probably know more about the universe, evolution, and the history of your religion than either of you. I have a qualified opinion, which I can defend quantitatively and logically. But you still blow it off! I hate that crap!

Are these your best arguments? That is a sad state of affairs indeed.

I'm a professional biologist, and not unfamiliar with logic or with the history of religion. I can respect your opinion, but I still think you've reached the wrong conclusion. I have to believe in God because otherwise there's no basis for reason. . . saying that logic emerged from evolution is unsatisfactory. A mindless, irrational process can't lead to rational thought. It might give the illusion of it, but that's another matter. Logic depends on being really true and absolutely trustworthy, not just here and now but always. It has to have a connection to reality beyond just the atoms in my skull. If it didn't- if I could never be really certain that what I thought had any validity beyond just the electrical impulses in my brain, then I could never trust my thinking to mean anything at all, because it might at any time be irrational, and I wouldn't even know it. Evolution selects only for useful things, and I can think of a number of examples in which it's useful (reproductively speaking) to believe a lie. That kind of situation won't do at all, if you believe that logical analysis always yields truth. So I'm forced to believe that my brain must have been purposely designed for thinking, or else I can't trust the arguments that lead me to any belief. To have any confidence in reason, you have to believe in a God of some kind or other. An atheist has to be content to know nothing for certain all his life. I guess you could brazen it out and actually accept a position like that, but if you do then you ought not to try to reason with someone who thinks differently, because both of you would be wasting your time.

Absolutely. Therein lies the difference between faith and reason - no matter how perfectly constructed some logical argument is, faith in any given religion can trump that by its very nature. At least, when said arguments are provided, they give the faithful an opportunity to hear the other side as it is best represented, and should they choose to believe some specific statement of reason, said argument may resonate with them at some later date.

I'm not one for conspiracies, well at least not when it comes to this stuff, but there has to be one for this situation, because Bush didn't make it up there on his merits.

Obviously since they are the best arguments that you can come up with, you must not know what you are talking about.
