A car salesman's objective is to maximize the dealership's profit. To do this, he has to separate the you from as much of your money as possible. You, on the other hand, want to hold on to as much as possible. This sets up an automatic adversarial relationship between the customer and the salesman.

All of the saleman's training and experience are oriented to getting the best deal for the dealership. He sells cars every day, so he's pretty good at it. On the other hand, most people buy a car only once every few years. As a result of this, the customer is at a disadvantage, both in terms of training and experience. This makes the customer resentful of the salesman. Customers lie too. They lie about how much they like the car, how well they took care of the car they're trying to trade in, how much money they have to spend on a car, etc. The difference is, the salesmen are better liars because they've had more practice.

People make bad, uneducated decisions about buying a car and then need someone to blame for their irresponsibility. Customers lie about everything (trade in condition, credit, when they will call, when they will come back). Basically car salesmen work very long hours, deal with people who hate them before they even speak to them the first time, people who lie to them, curse them and judge them. And at the end of the day we are only trying to make a living to support our family like everyone else. And salesmen can not, by law, lie about most things people say they do.

Some time ago Edmunds.com sent a writer to work under cover at a car dealership.

http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying/articles/42962/article.html

He worked as a salesman at 4 or 5 different dealerships in the course of 4 months or so. Every place had a series of strategies set in place to trick or persuade the customer into spending more money, no matter how much they intended to spend to begin with.
I have personally heard a story from a guy who now owns a dealership (in Ohio) who told the tale of his days as a sales manager. One of his salesmen came to him "boss, sign this, her first offer is $1500 more than we wanted". The sales manger says "no, go back and get $500 more out of her". The salesman was perplexed "why?" The boss explained "if we take her first offer, she'll think we're screwing her, but if we negotiate, she'll think she's getting a deal." The salesman replied, "but we are screwing her. " The manager replied, "but she doesn't know that".
In the end the salesman got the extra $500 out of the customer, and just as the boss was about to sign the contract he handed it back, "go get another $32 out of her" he told the salesman. "Why?" the salesman asked. "Because you can" grinned the slimy cheating dirtbag sales manager.

That is the reality at all but the finest of dealerships. That is why people hate car salesmen.

People need someone to blame after making a poor decision. It is in your power to tell them you will talk to them when your done looking,or that your just not interested.A strong mind will research the products before a purchace, and cannot BE pressured. The biggest fault most salesmen have is not stressing enough for buyers to read the owners manual and follow it.It is a given that there are dishonest guys out there, but most are just trying to make a living and support they're familys. Can't fault them for that!

Car salesman who resort to lying NEVER last long these days. The problem is that there is such high turnover in the industry because so few salesman are actually good at building repeat and referral business. That is the whole name of the game. If you can sell value, learn when to say "no" and actually deliver an experience that your customer deserves; than you can build a good reputation for yourself. A characteristic of a great salesman is one who only works by appointment, rarely has a need to work the lot and has all his business come to him/her. He/she works this way because they have established credibility over the years through honesty, being friendly and direct and making the customer feel valued. Poor salesman are not trustworthy. They resort to all kinds of "shady" stuff to literally survive. That s because customers do not speak highly of them and they have no repeat and referral business.

because they lie and cheat to try to sell you a car for as much as possible. they begin with a price so outrageous, that when they allow you to "widdle" it down, to where you think you are getting a deal, they are still making a very large profit on the vehicle.
and in used cars, they will try there best to sell you a car that is junk, under the pretense that it is a good running car.
most of them are snakes.

Well.....Where shall I start? They hang all over you like a vulture even after you ask your question about a car or truck. They rarely tell the truth about a car or truck . They are in the business of selling and making money.Pure and simple.!After growing up in the used car capital in the world (Murray,Ky.) for many years and around dealers all my life I have seen the best and the worst in them!

Because they will tell you what you want to hear even if it is a lie just to make a sale on a crappy car. The finance guys suck even worse.
