Once you get past the first poke of the novocaine needle, it's not so bad. Some dentists, I think, are more skilled in the TECHNIQUE of applying the anesthetic than others. After that the gum is numb (smile--that rhymes, doesn't it?) and the dentist can then go to work with the drilling and filling (hey, ANOTHER rhyme). You may feel the pressure and the vibrations of the equipment but usually no pain. If you do, just let the dentist know and he (or she) can give you another shot (which you shouldn't feel, anyway, because of the first one). I agree it SEEMS terrifying; but if you've practiced good dental hygiene (brushing, flossing, diet, etc) there's no need to worry. So have a seat, open wide, and enjoy those pearly whites and--when your dentist tells you it's ok--crunch a few apples for me....

Going to the dentist can be scary. Usually the filling itself does not hurt. Depending on how deep the cavity is they may or may not numb you to drill out the cavity. If he does numb you, he will give you a shot of novocaine in your gum. The shot is uncomfortable but not terribly painful. Its more scary seeing the needle than actually getting the shot. When the dentist starts to drill out the cavity don't be alarmed the drill has a shrill sound to it and you may see what looks like smoke coming out of your mouth but that is normal. That is the worse part of it. When he puts in the filling material it does not hurt. Hope that helps you.

Fillings do not hurt. You will be able to hear the dentist and let the dentist know that you would like to be made aware of everything he is doing. This should help ease any anxiety you have. The shots that they give you are in a very insensitive area that will help to numb any pain you could have.

The fillings themselves don't "hurt". They can be a little sensitive to hot and cold afterwards but it doesn't "hurt". The worst part about getting fillings is getting the Novacaine shots, but it's just for a few moments. You'll be ok. Good luck!

Agreed. You'll be nice and numb, and I never had any pain after a filling. The drilling will seem kind of odd and noisy, but won't hurt. And compared to root canals or rotten teeth, fillings are your friend!

It is not the filling which hurts - it's the drilling. Aside from the pain you may experience during and after drilling, you will also experience a horrible drilling sensation, which is akin to fingers on a blackboard. The injection may also be momentarily painful. Dont be scared - take someone with you so you can chat to keep your mind off it, and to his / her hand. Try not to concentrate on the pain while your teeth are being drilled and good luck! (i had my teeth drilled once without painkillers....)

nowhere near as bad as what happens if you don't get it filled and then need either an extraction or root canal. the only part that hurts is a tiny little injection of lidocaine to numb it up. the worst part of the whole thing is keeping your mouth wide open!

Prepare yourself for a shot! That is the part that hurts. The filling part is easy, it's the shot of novacaine that hurts.I went to the dentist once and the needle malfuntioned 3 times before it worked...OUCH!!!
